vini, vedi, no vici.

After she hung up, it hit me that conversations like this is just another way that bitcoin will spread to India, despite the recent legal and regulatory obstacles to bitcoin in this country.  There are many technical support and call center staff in India like this that will quickly become familiar with bitcoin because they work for companies like Clearly Contacts.  This call center representative now identifies bitcoin as a payment system like Visa or PayPal.  Hopefully they are pleased when they find that this is an international currency open to all people from all countries.

Bitcoin is on a way to become mainstream in India. But, I think mass adoption is miles away. Indian want everything in physical form, they'll be skeptical about Bitcoin until they see coin from Titan. If you explain them, it virtual currency and blah blah blah.. They won't take interest. But, if you show them a physical coin and tell them it's price was $30 dollar last year and it's now $800. They'll invest without any further questions. People here like tangible things, perhaps it is the sole reason behind failure of virtual money/mobile payment system introduced by hopeful State Bank of India. Here, you won't be able to coax them into Bitcoin as a payment system, Utopian currency or some libertarian philosophy. Best way to inject them is.. there are only 21 million coins. Its price was this much last year and this much now.  Tell them, US has this much, Europe has this much and China has this much.. Then plain question. Do you want to have some coins? Grin Grin

My daily "bitcoin" Google search turned up this piece from the Vancouver Sun, where 'Clearly Contacts' CEO Roger Hardy identifies bitcoin as a trend that "is going to stick."  He says that Clearly Contacts is "a technology business, [and] we need to be at the front of this trend."

We checked out the website and saw that their prices were better than what my partner was paying at the nearby brick-and-mortar.

So....here's the India connection...

After not seeing a "Pay with Bitcoin" option at the web checkout, she called customer support.  She was put through to a call centre in India.

"..."

Call center staff from India: "Umm, bitwhat?"

"Bitcoin.  The Vancouver Sun newspaper today said that you now accept bitcoin, but I can't see this payment option at the web checkout."

Call center staff from India: "Hmmm, what is this bithuh?"

"It's another way to pay, sort of like Visa or PayPal".

Call center staff from India: "How do you spell it?"

"B-I-T-C-O-I-N"

Call center staff from India: "Let me check our system..........[typing]........oh Clearly Contacts accepting bitcoin [pronunciation correct now] as a new payment option.......yes it seems we are accepting bitcoin as a new payment method.  It doesn't appear to be setup yet but we should have it ready in the near future.  Is there anything else I can help you with?"

"No, that's great.  Thank you very much."

Call center staff from India: "OK, have a nice day!"
