Malayala Manorama has done a box on BTC today.

The article in English

Bitcoin: Gaining popularity in South India
Chinese central bank bans Bitcoin transactions

The digital currency Bitcoin is gaining popularity in India. Records shows that the number of people doing bitcoin transactions has increased in the last 2 weeks. Portals claim that bitcoin transaction against INR has risen to 50 transactions per day. Indian Bitcoin exchange portal buysellbitco.in ( printing typo) claims that last Monday alone they did more than 70 transactions.

It is mostly the IT professionals who are leading in the bitcoin transactions. Based on the PAN card records used for transactions, city of Bangalore leads in the volume of transaction. Cities like Chennai and Hyderabad follow closely. It is estimated that there are atleast 1000 Bitcoin users in the Bangalore city.

BTC was valued at $10 last year and this year its value has increased upto a $1000. But everyday its value shows significant fluctuations. Because of this volatility people are advised to exercise caution in BTC transactions. There is a Global Bitcoin conference scheduled on Dec 14 in Bangalore, aimed to boost the awareness of Bitcoin in India.

Meanwhile, Chinese Central bank has banned BTC related transactions. It has banned banks and other financial institutes from doing BTC transactions. Central bank says they do not recognize BTC as a currency. But individuals are free to do BTC transactions at their own risk.

Prominent Chinese Bitcoin exchange BTCChina has done more than 2 million bitcoin transactions. French Central Bank warns over Bitcoin transactions. FBI has seized 26000 Bitcoins that were used for illegal transactions.

Not today Benson, I need to confirm. They did one about a few weeks ago

none today, just checked

Cool, would be good to have an image or URL of the article in this thread.

Hey...online articles are present, but they are just re-writes of other articles from Reuters etc.....Searching for the article from 3 weeks ago might be a distant possibility as I have to scourge through a big mound of newspapers for it.

Let me see though, promising nothing. Manorama is owned by people related to me...distant though (irrelevant). I could call them, try and get the date. Lets see if I have the drive to do that. hehe...
