Kickstarter has a lot of serious projects. The potato salad is a one off joke, wouldn't repeat again 
Surprisingly the joke ones are on the rise, just ridiculous to look at this really. They would be better of making ice-cream IMHO.Seriously people love wasting their money "even if it's just few cents".

Over 3000 people raised $35000 to make potato salad?? They should make their money useful by supporting legit projects.
I'm sure it was more than just an attempt to make potato salad. It was probably a university project about social engineering or something.

According to the article, there are a lot of legit kickstarter projects that are nowhere near as compelling as this one. Although the project itself was stupid, it did everything right:
-Clear goal, and interesting (well, funny anyway) story
-Clear benefit to backers (silly fun and/or eating potato salad is a benefit)
-No self-important nonsense
Lots and lots of kickstarters are basically "fund this because I wanna do it" which is not a good reason. This one was "fund this for the lulz and/or you get to eat potato salad" which is a plenty good reason.
