Generally it's unnecessary. Products like this are generally vastly more expensive for the same kind of material, just because they have a design related to something you're interested in.
Some items like t-shirts and mugs have gone way too far in this direction and people are willing to buy mugs for pretty much anything (usually the same generic mug).
Also not really a "phenomenon" just another thing to make products about. No matter what it was that people were interested in, someone would take the opportunity to start making some merch.
