No requirement for it. I mean as other sayings, you can give merit(s) without making posts on the thread or even replies.
However, ensure that you really know the right post to be merited.
One of the things that make you get penalties may be using merit abuse to certain accounts or proven to sell merit to other members.
Give merit(s) to posts that you think they deserve for it, it is not about how long the posts.

Just look at the most popular topics on the forum and you would have answered your question. The most merited topics usually have more merit received than replies. You could have taken a look at the known merit sources which are easy to find out by looking at members monthly spend on merit and take a look at how they give their merit and if they reply in the majority of threads they have given merit too. The answer is no they do not post every time.

The only thing you can be punished for is selling your merit or otherwise trading your merits for something, like for example merit backscratching. Aside from this, no one would care what or how you merit, sometimes people merit one-word posts, small jokes, reposted memes.

Hello everyone...I don't know if the question I'm about to ask really make sense or not. I don't know if meriting a post without commenting on it is a sin here. Although I have not taken my time to research here but I think asking will be better for me since I have audience who can put me through.

If I merit a post without any comment can I be penalize for it?
Like all members before me have said before - no, you are not penalized for giving a merit to a thread that you don't participate. Think about the times that you are in an active discussion with your friends and in your mind you are thinking - "Yeah, I totally understand his point", "That for sure makes sense" - without actually participating in the discussion because you wouldn't have anything new to add but also believe that your view is well reflected on the opinion that your friend is expressing - Congratulations, that's (some) example of how the merit system actually works.

This, of course, can be extrapolated to threads that generate good value towards the community and that you find useful - if I would speak of my case I believe I merit more (when I can) than I participate in some discussions, and that is ok as well. Imagine if the merit sources would have to comment in every discussions that they give merit too - they would go mad in a matter of days (I could be exaggerating, just wanted to show different perspectives).

I don't think there is any one that will punish you for give anybody merit without commenting if the post really worth it nobody will punish you. But there are lot's of people that buy and sell merit if you are into that and you are caught then you are definitely going to be ban so avoid trading merit, work for it and if you really worth it then it will be given to you.

You already made a subtle comment of liking the post with merit/s alone. It is like virtual pat in the back also. Smiley

You awarding merit to any community user without portraying or dropping a comment on the thread never be an offence to any one here, awarding Merit indicates that the topic or thread of user inspired you or educate you or impressed you, most times giving a merit is like a pleasure, likeness via the composition of the text, it's not necessary that you most make a comment before awarding Merit to anybody, i hope the two persons that commented above got it right from my perspective, the only basic precautions as a new user, you have to take at a quality post before giving out merit, don't give merit to low quality post.

No. There are quite a lot of dimensions to it, when you send merits to any post, it must not go with a comment (if you feel you have something to say, then you can comment), just the same way you can comment or reply to a post without meriting it, you could merit a post even when your ideas and that of the op isn't in tandem, the forum works in such a way as to make merits really subjective, so there are quite a lot of things you can do with your smerits without having any issues (except selling or buying it).

You can merit any post you want without commenting about it, also not necessary to make any post under such thread if you have nothing to contribute or if someone has posted about your opinion, no need of repetition, but make sure the merited posts are useful.
