Merit as the name implies is the result of hardwork, which is deserving praise.

I think it is better put as " is SUPPOSE to be the result of hardwork.

deserving praise

Agreeable to this, yes. A good post should deserve merit which serve as appreciation or praise.

At times also it is not only post termed as post done as an outcome of hard work that received merit but some post just brightens your day by making you laugh away tension and high blood pressure and readers award merit too, I like such if it makes me laugh. So is not always a post with hard work that get merit but users give merit just basically about how they feel about the post and merit can be given for whatever reason. That is why you just need to be natural, about your natural self and capacity and not to chase merit.

Merits are more likely a medal when you created something useful and helpful to all. You may think that merit is not for free then you are correct. You need to work for it in order to get one or more. Forum users have their own criteria to give their merit and not just give there give here situation as it will defeat the purpose of merit which theymos set it's purpose in this forum.

Karma is another forms of Merit Reddit use to qualify or reward a user who make a good composition of write-up or communication, so this is also related to Facebook likes, which Facebook user's use like to appreciate someone images or postures in picture, and also a text of someone.
From my interpretation, and understanding of Reddit's up voting system is its to up vote things that you believe deserve more visibility. Remember, that Reddit isn't by default sorted in chronological order, and while it can be filtered by new, most sub reddits are defaulted to "hot". Thus, whatever you upvote has more chance of being seen by others.

Merit isn't comparable since merit is less prone to abuse, doesn't effect visibility (you could argue that merit posts stand out slightly more, but it still doesn't effect the order of things), and is given to reward those for making substantial posts.

Reddit's system is therefore not even comparable. Remember, that anyone can upvote including those that just signed up. So, theoretically you could inflate upvotes or downvotes simply by creating an account farm. Here on Bitcointalk the merits are limited, and by design less merit per merit sent. Of course, we have merit sources which keep injecting a certain amount of merit each month based on theymos' calculations, but normal users are receiving half of a merit for every one merit they receive.

it's like a system for giving appreciation to those who deserve that, previously only relied on activity and it was easier to rank up. there are many positive impact in forum with merit

Why do the forum need merit to grow? In the bottom I see

Did the forum not grow in 2006 - 2009?

Those who have been members of the forum for a little longer (say at least 5 years), know well what the merit is for. The forum simply became a place where anyone could reach any rank regardless of the quality of their posts, and spam literally overwhelmed the entire forum. The Merit system has prevented new hordes of spammers from advancing in the system, so we can say that quality has come to the surface and dirt has sunk to the bottom.

The forum didn't even exist in 2006, what you're looking at is just an echo of the past that still lingers on the forum, until we finally get a new and more modern forum. See for more information -> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simple_Machines_Forum

Well in Reddit, you could downvote and it will reduce the downvoted user's karma.
Reddit's karma system is kind of broken actually since it show random numbers sometimes in my profile.
I wouldn't assimilate merit to karma system of Reddit. It looks more like the Award system more than the Karma system except you don't buy it.

You need to make contributions and helpful posts on this forum to get merit, if you don't get any then you aren't doing the right thing on here, help people out and create good topics, this is really not hard to do unless you are here for something else, maybe your mind is too focus on money making only

What is merit?

Think of Merit as a Karma point given to helpful/ informative posts to users. Merit also helps a user to rank up to higher levels of membership.
Karma is another forms of Merit Reddit use to qualify or reward a user who make a good composition of write-up or communication, so this is also related to Facebook likes, which Facebook user's use like to appreciate someone images or postures in picture, and also a text of someone.

So their is total difference between merit of bitcointalk, karma of Reddit and finally Facebook likes. Now looking at merit merit is importants because it determine the rank up of a user,
in bitcointalk community, whilee karma in Reddit is a criteria to  build trust and confidence to member, so looking at Facebook likes, it doesn't have any important or any relevant impact to a user, except it's followers.

It's not a product of coincidence.

Yes, the person can also disagree with you reasonably, and yet awards you merit.
Agree = merit
Disagree = merit

Yeah.. I strongly agree with you.. Just as the name goes "Merit"  which means you just have to be worthy of it for you to be awarded..
Because as for me, which with my few months of stay on this forum, I see Merit as an award given to someone for solving a problem, or providing solution to problems.

Yes, the person can also disagree with you reasonably, and yet awards you merit.
Therefore, it is important to note that one does not need to align with you in order to award you a merit. It is the quality of your work, the usefulness, how many problems it will solve and how many souls it touches that determines the number of merit it will attract.
Merit is needed for growth in the forum, always ensure your posts are rich in order to earn you some merits.
Therefore, merit is not for free but by merit as the name implies
