You get merit points when someone sends you some for one of your posts. Additionally, when someone sends you merit points,
half of those points can be sent by you to other people.

This one is correct.
Just be helpful, users will award you merit sooner or later.

So many new users want everything fast... it takes time.

Members and higher rank forum members can give you  a free smerti. With the introduction of the merit system, higher ranks apart from jnr members well given smerit which they can give out to deserving post.

Jr members that have received enough sMerit to be able to redistribute it can send merit. Same goes for any rank within the forum including Newbies. Sending merit is not limited to rank at all.

However, the majority of sMerit is sent by merit sources, and these are usually higher ranked members which are fairly established.

Any member can send you merit points if he believes that your post was helpful and has a value.
Each range has a determined number of merit points they can spend, some members are merit sources, they can send more than regular membres.
You will find more topics talking about this subject with more details.

Everyone could get/award Merit. Everyone can give Merit to others. If someone gets 1 Merit, then he can give 0.5 sMerit. One more word, the more Merit is, the more Merit can give to others.

Everyone can give merits to the others as long as he/she already has some merits in hand. You can be one of these guys too if you have received merits by making threads / posts that are appreciated by some generous senior members.

Everyone can award merits but it is necessary to receive some before:

If your post gets merited, you will receive 1 Merit and 0,5 sMerit. sMerit means "sendable Merits". You can send these sMerits to other posts. If you have 1 sMerit it is possible to give this sMerit to posts you want to reward. Finally you need 2 Merit to send 1 Merit to another person.

sender     => sends             => receives       receiver

1 sMerit                                                   1 Merit      0,5 sMerit
1 sMerit                                                   1 Merit      0,5 sMerit

now he can merit posts and gets a sender     => sends          => receives       receiver

                                                                                    1 sMerit                                                                                               1 Merit      0,5 sMerit

Members and above ranks are those that are entitled to offer free smerit to other members if they think your post are worth it. The more rank one has , the more smerit that person can offer to another member.

No, man, you are mistaken. Everyone (except merit sources) need to earn merit if they want to have some smerits to give away.
For instance, I now don't have any smerit, for I always merit the best post. Every time I have some merits to give, I give them all.

So, it is not about your rank at all, but about the merits you earn. For each 2 merit received you will have one to send to others, no matter the rank you have.

Read the above posts and topics referred there, all necessary information you should know about the merit system were provided.
Merit begging is not allowed, do not ask people to give you merit.  Create high quality posts, people will eventually note them and reward you some merit.

I honestly have no idea how I ended up with so much merit I was just posting away Smiley and I never even knew about merit untl one day some guy msgd me asking me to send him some LOL. So I was like sure why not!? But now I want to earn some more because I realize I can't rank up without it gotta get some MERIT, and LOL @ smerits (funny name)

hahaha that's a funny story. I think that's very nice to hear. That should be the purpose of this forum in my opinion. I've been exploring around all the different threads, and I can understand now how some posts get awarded merits, sometimes even a large number of merits. There are people who make very useful posts for users of this forum, or even sharing extremely useful thoughts or tips on topics outside of this forum too. Such acts show me that there is still hope in humanity haha. It is very heartening to see how genuine some people are when it comes to helping others with the problems/worries that they share on this forum. Even if some people do it merely for the merits on their accounts, overall it is still a positive thing I believe, since this system helps to encourage quality inputs and this snowballs to benefit the entire community on this forum. I like your style that you just contribute willingly without the agenda to be awarded merits, keep it up mate! U have my support!

I believe there are special people on this forum who have been given the power and authority to give merits to people. Aside this special people, forum members who are above the member rank have smerit that is spendable merits that can be given to someone  else, when you are given merits , you can send half, known as the smerit of it to someone else. For example if you are given 2 merits, you will gain 1 spendable merit known as smerit. When  you send a merit to someone, it is your smerit that will be deducted but your merit will remain intact.

Hi guys, new here. After reading thru all the necessary threads for newbies, it is still unclear as to who can award merits. Is it only after u reach a certain rank? or is it only specific people are allowed?
Every accounts that has smerit (sendable merit) can award anyone as they see fit to received the reward. Every merit you get there's also smerit received which is half of the merit you got, example: People merit your post with 10 merits in all then your sMerit will be 5 sMerits which you will use to reward someone you see fit to receive your reward. When you merit a certain person your merit won't be deducted and only your smerit will be deducted depends on how many smerit you send.

People who have merits are the only ones who can give you some. For every merits that they have they receive half of it. Example: I was given 20 merits by different people, therefore I have 10 sMerits by now. sMerits means they are the merits that you can give to other users that posts are quite helpful. For every merits that they give you, you receive half of it. (1 sent merit to you = 0.5sMerit for you). But there's no easy way of getting it. You should always be active in the forum and have some useful posts. You should not worry about getting merits for now and just be consistent being active and posting.

Thanks! I'm pretty clear about merits and smerits now. May I ask, u mentioned u received 20 merits, but why does your account show only 10 merits? This is still confusing to me. Is there a delay when u are issued merits for it to be displayed on your profile?

I figure, Natural Perm was giving an illustration of how the system works. This is not their actual situation. In short, you receive 4 merits for a post, and they will be displayed for everyone to see. Plus you get 2 spendable merits which YOU can use to credit to other posts you deem useful. Smerits are not displayed under your profile picture next to your posts.

Hi guys, new here. After reading thru all the necessary threads for newbies, it is still unclear as to who can award merits. Is it only after u reach a certain rank? or is it only specific people are allowed?
A quick summary to answer your question:

1. Users with a rank of Member or above before the 24th of January 2018 received an initial and onetime only airdrop of smerit (spendable merit).

The amount received in terms of global forum aggregate was around 600k as theymos disclosed.

The quantity the above users received in the airdrop is based on the following formula also disclosed by theymos:

Code:
yearActivity = activity in the last ~year, max 378
freeMerit = the merit (not sMerit) you started with
modifier =
  0.1 if member
  0.2 if full member
  0.25 if sr member
  0.35 if hero
  0.4 if legendary

return (yearActivity/378) * modifier * freeMerit

So if you were a member you would have received during the initial airdrop 1 smerit at most, a full member would receive 20 at most and so on.

2. There are also 80 users that act as official merit sources and may award up to 18500 smerits per month between them. These sources are not public and do it voluntarily, being users of a certain status and degree of respect. Their monthly smerit does renew each month (with certain rules) and constitutes the only renewing smerit in the system.

3.Every time any user receives merit, he gets half that amount of smerits to send to others at his discretion. Halves are not allowed, so the basic idea is that for every cumulative of 2 that you receive you get 1 smerit to send. Sent smerit is not renewed (do not confuse smerit with merit; your merit counter never decreases).

Theses are the basis to merit generation. The ethical side to sending merit vouches for you to send them to posts that you find are contributive to the forum (helping others, knowledgeable, good point of view even if you don’t agree, etc.). Merit abuse may be pursued  (I.e. Ill use of smerit, which is a whole other another chapter).

Merit: this counter never decreases and is increased with every smerit you receive.
SMerit: this counter increases with every 2 cumulative smerits you receive (you get half) and decreases every time you send smerit to a post.

Wow thank you so much for this detailed response. The whole issuance of merits is very clear to me now. Thank you for taking the time to explain to me. If I could, I would give you merits for this haha, you rock!

The more you want to be merited the more you won't get it. Change your mindset about this forum and try to help out instead of posting just to get merits. This forum is not made to make a living in the first place. Many newbies like us are just spamming there way to rank up just to be involved in signature campaigns but with lack of knowledge that could really benefit the forum itself that is why the merit system is being implemented to reduce newbies spamming shitty posts.
The best way to earn those merits is to not think of getting merits at all. Focus on helping out improve the forum by sharing useful and valuable information to everyone.
