In my opinion MEW is one of the safest wallets. Probably the attackers got your private key through the HOLA VPN application a few days ago.

MEW is a good coin purse. Now scammers are very sophisticated and you need to worry about protecting your own money not expecting a miracle.

Hackers can in many ways steal your money. Your computer may be infected by a virus that steals your private key from the cookies. Therefore, it is worth using a hardware purse.
Myetherwallet is open source and even though, they face technical issues from time to time, they are still a reputable service so If you're accusing them of stealing your funds, be sure that It's not from them.
