Some guiminers will tell you how fast you are mining. I would compare the speeds using them. Check out http://guiminer.org/.

Really, "trying out mining on each one" is not substantially harder than running the hypothetical benchmark tool that you are looking for.
Don't worry, it is not rocket science -- just give it a try!

I have multiple computers, all with varying specs. While trying out mining on each one and see what happens would work, it's not the best way to go about it. As for the hardware comparisons, that would take me days to go through everything and work out what each would be capable of.

I take it from the responses then that no such software exists.

Yeah, this isn't really necessary.  Just use the Hardware comparison charts

Try the chart here https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison

His post mean trying mining with your computer and it will let you know how effective it is. The mining software does what you want.

Hi, I was just wondering if there is a benchmarking tool I can use to find out how effective my computer would be at mining?

Any suggestions?
