I simply "nice" (see "man nice") all CPU mining programs including coins that are doing their own mining internally without using external programs.

Basically put nice in front of the daemon name if you are setting gen=1, or type nice minerd etc whatever blah blah instead of plain old minerd etc whatever blah blah blah.

The CPU miners than pretty much only use spare CPU cycles, which if you have more than one core they usually can find. I have been raking in lots of primecoin this way.

cGminer and XPM has weird effects on my LTC mining speed.

Sometimes cGminer would run at full hashing rate, other times, it would run at 20%.

I'm maxing out my CPU mining XPM.

Same thing I've done since I started mining anything...
Mine with total cores -1. Full speed GPU, good speed CPU mining.

On primecoin I had it at  setgenerate true -1 (all cores)   but that was sucking the power out of my gpu's for litecoin.

I changed it to setgenerate true 7, leaving 1 free, and got the much improved performance, albeit with the 12 percent litecoin loss.

Set the cpu affinity of CGMiner to use 1 core, and set it's priority to High (you can do this from the task manager or through a bat file by placing "start /affinity 1 /high" before CGMiner).

Thanks  Smiley

Will this decrease the prime coin mining pps?

Just run primecoin with a low priority.

Just interested in putting this out and getting opinions.

Running litecoin mining and primecoin mining.  Have an AMD 8350 and two 7970 graphics cards.

I have read that primecoin mining will not negatively effect gpu based mining.

But if I run primecoin utilizing all 8 cores on my processor it sucks the guts out of my gpu's and my litecoin hashes drop dramatically.

I have found a happy medium, running primecoin with 7 cores - this produces a drop in litecoin hashes of approx. 12 percent.

Would love to hear other peoples thoughts on this.
