Your question isn't specific enough. If you were asking here, of course, the mining itself only for Cryptocurrencies. Am I misunderstand your question?

Coins like XPR are not mineable and there are other POS coins out there.
You can also do Folding instead of Mining for SETI@Home but you don't get paid to do that. Its more geared towards research.
In general when mining becomes unprofitable people just sell the GPUs and CPUs to gamers. ASICS are usually sold to people with cheaper electricity, until the cycles repeat themselves over and over again.
