This is the reason I'm thinking about it.

I just want to tickle my brain a bit, sort of some "self education".

Thought I'd go with a Dualminer, USB hub, fan and a netbook.
Mine Bitcoin/Litecoin at the same time. I think it'd be neat to see how it all works.

For earning BTC? I bought 2 contracts for someone else to do the work for me. I don't have the time nor funds to go heavy with this. But I really do want to learn more about it in a "hands-on" fashion. Grin

If you want to mine bitcoin I suggest that you begin with cloud mining. Mining with your stuff is expensive e complicated for beginners. With cloud mining you pay the money and get the bitcoins. They are inexpensive and there are several group buys setup depending on where you live.
If you want something more powerful the Ant Miner S1 is a 180 gh/s to 200 gh/s unit that is affordable at $750+ depending on the group buy or seller.

The main thing you want to do is buy something that is shipping as pre-orders you don't mine until they can deliver and during that time they have your money.

Don't expect to get easy profit in bitcoin/altcoin mining, and be sure to check some profit calculators.

Please do a search on the forums and post a more specific question. This question could be any number of things. SHA256 vs. Scrypt. Budget, experience, knowledge, there are many many variables to this seemingly simple question and you will get both fact and opinion in the responses you receive.

Simply put it is difficult to get a ROI mining right now so if you are only looking for a profitable return on your money it would be best to do your own research. If you are just looking to learn more and participate start with usb miners and go from there.
