Mining with a normal desktop pc is far away from recommended. The calculating will destroy your pc running a faucetrotator will be more profitable.
Let me guess, and you have just the one you want to recommend right...

Nonsense.

Your hardware will be fine as long as you keep it properly cooled and don't force it to run outside of it's recommended specs, ie overclocking/over volting it into scrap.  Heat kills electronics so don't run stuff too hot and it will last a long time.

For CPU mining on a core2 quad use cpuminer-opt

https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/ann-cpuminer-opt-v3881-open-source-optimized-multi-algo-cpu-miner-1326803

You can GPU mine with  a cuda enabled GPU such as a 750ti

The hottest coin at the moment is the Ethereum. You can use 750ti to mine it, but the efficiency is low.

GeForce 9xxx series cards do not support CUDA, so you can't mine on them.
They're also ancient, they wouldn't mine much even if they COULD mine at all - there are ON-BOARD chipsets that are higher performance by a wide margin.

Hi guys i want to try mining altcoins and i want to know if its possible to mine on this old PC:

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU    Q9400  @ 2.66GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.7GHz
Memory: 4096MB RAM
Display: NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT

If its possible to mine something, what software i need and what coin do you recommend to mine?

If you want to try GPU mining you need to upgrade your 9600 GT. Used nvidia 750ti or amd 7970/ 280x is the cheapest way to start, you maybe need more powerfull PSU for amd though.

I'm running my cards on very old hardware and they work just fine.

Thank you guys! Amazing and fast replays Smiley
I will start looking in to dedicated miners (cheap ones)

Try out an old Ant miner or maybe a GAW fury, they wont make much but if you hold it can add up

That CPU does not support AES-NI. So I think it is not worth mining. If a CPU supports AES_NI, it can mine Monero, although not profitable.
