OP, Do you want to mine cryptocurrency in the background when you read the sites on the Internet?
This annoys many users on a stationary PC.
Mobile devices are not intended for mining. If users find out about it, then you will fail.
And in some countries you will have to spend money on lawyers. This is a failed idea.
After the breakdown of mobile devices users, you will get a lot of problems.

It's possible and is similar of browser mining, when you visit website, for example for shopping and at the same time owner has put script and profits with you, while you visit website, you mine coins for owner.
Also there was a different idea (and silly to my mind). It was gambling related where gambling website would have pool and gamblers connect to that pool, mine and then gamble with that mined coins.

It’s possible, but some mobile devices have pretty weak CPUs, and excessive processor usage may make certain phones and mobile devices crash and/or overheat. If the game’s more basic and doesn’t use as much processing power, this could mean potentially more room for mining to take place; either way, it’ll take tuning on individual devices to ensure system stability and optimal mining performance. I could see this potentially being successful on free games.

I don't think it can happen since bitcoin is no longer supported in GPU mining or even in mobile mining.
However, you can make a game for mobile which they can earn altcoin or you can build your own game with CPU mining so that while they playing a game their mobile is mining but it should depend on mobile performance not for how many players could receive large block rewards.

Your idea is great it can be possible if you can start a project like this then test if many investors would be intereseted.

Something I was thinking of this morning, and perhaps there's something out there already that I'm not aware of.

Could a mobile game be developed that when played (theoretically by thousands or even millions of gamers worldwide) crypto was actually being mined in the background? The crypto could be bitcoin or something else depending on the developers. The gamers, in essence, are the mining pool, and they would share in any crypto profits just like mining pools currently do.

In theory, if you had enough gamers playing, the mining would be continuous, and the more the gamers that play the game(s), a larger portion of the block reward they could receive. The game would be the hook to get people into mining other than standard ways, or as another alternative than some of the current methods.

Perhaps the game isn't free, or maybe it is. Lots of options I would think since mobile gaming is such a huge market globally.

If this could be done correctly, I could see some great potential for the company/dev team behind it.
