Was reading this article, curious if anyone here ever tried mining coins with PS4
would be interested to learn more on the subject if anyone actually ever done this, thanks!

Those were Fifa bots, not miners.

The console has been out since 2014 and if it was possible we would of heard reports of them mining LTC/Doge back 2014, then when ETH got popular around 2017 till now. However there are no methods or reports that it has been possible yet.

Most likely reason is that the security is very tough to bypass to prevent piracy games, and makes its an uphill battle for any developers. They will run into issues and it won't be the most efficient anyways so what is the point. Plus SONY would also start to crackdown because they would have to deal with any warranty issues that arise from someone mining 24/7 and causing the console to overheat.

Would be interesting to hear from someone who has actually used a game console to mine
You wouldn't find anyone who's in for profit.

Those articles are doing it for publicity purposes;
The ones that actually show the process must be doing it to show that it's possible, not for mining profit.
That specific article however, is a bad example because it looks like the PS4s are there to gain "rare FIFA players" rather than mining.
There's no shown evidence that they are mining, the GPUs in that facility must be the ones that are mining.

But technically, it can produce SHA256d hashes but not high enough to mine Bitcoins (even pools wont accept your hashes).
It could mine altcoins though but while playing FIFA (described in the article), still possible but not reasonable.

I still find it very hard to believe that you can run a mining software off playstation 4 consoles, the GPU inside PS4 is equivalent to rx580 I believe so that console can do something around 30mh or a bit more but there is no single video to back this claim up so it's pretty hard to believe

If they were mining cryptocurrency with them, it wouldn't be any ASIC dominated coins because, just like @joniboini said, it wouldn't be profitable at all.

If you go to https://whattomine.com/coins and then click on 'GPU' at the top, you can see a list of all the most profitable coins there is that you would mine with a GPU, or in this case, a PS4

Even in the news, you linked above, they're not mining bitcoin at all. Well, you can try it, but don't expect to get any profit from doing it. Why would you use a console to do it anyway, you can use the same amount of money to buy hundreds of consoles to get ASICs.

Please read the stickied post at the top of this area... Mainly point-3:
Quote
3. Mining BITCOIN is done exclusively with dedicated BITCOIN mining hardware based on ASICs - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Application-specific_integrated_circuit . You CAN NOT meaningfully mine bitcoin today with CPU, GPU or even FPGAs. Bitcoin difficulty adapts to match the amount of mining done on the network and has reached levels trillions of times too high to mine meaningfully with PCs, laptops, tablets, phones, webpages, javascript, GPUs, and even generalised SHA hardware.
For BTC, trying to mine with anything other than an ASIC-based miner is beyond useless even when using free or stolen power.

For some alt crapcoins - maybe, but that discussion would belong in the altcoin areas not here in the Bitcoin area.
