I'm not on any social media website's side but I think the reason why they have a very strict censorship is becauae like you said they are “mainstream” and being mainstream also catches the attention of the authorities and they have to control what goes published in their website. BCT is also popular but to the extent within the crypto industry and it is their advantage that they can have a little bit more when it comes to freedom of speech. Aside from that comparing BCT on other forums I have been with I can say that the rules we have are more easier to follow compared to others.

The worst racists are the anti-racists. I call black people black, and that isn't to indicate they are inferior, but just a basic method of simplifying a description. It's like saying tall or red-haired. Racism is calling them "people of colour", in my opinion that indicates that the user consider the person to be inferior to them, as it can't be considered to be a description.

Terminated.
No wonder we are wasting most of our time doing nothing, creating nothing, just blabbering about nonsense and combating ill-intended people. Maybe it is due to the lack of this so-called thing, that doesn't actually even exist in this context, "censorship of a privately-held forum".

-snip- Once in a while someone suggests to restrict freedom of speech (often with arguments such as "this person is racist") -snip-
Indeed there are some people who give advice to limit freedom of speech and express themselves in this forum.
Harsh and hurtful words are associated with the word "racism", but they do not understand the meaning of racism itself.
I do not call it racism, but rather the words "Sarcasm".

many are offended by painful harsh words, but it all depends on the person himself.
If you do not want to be offended do not use this forum, because this forum is intended for adults who understand what the meaning and purpose of all the discussions that exist in this forum.

Freedom of expression with different arguments keeps this forum alive without the need for censorship.

@jetty, if we're not on firstName basis I assume that post wasn't for me 😂

I was wearing my posting familiar's hat, so OP just slipped into the reply. No personal slight intended.

By the way - I'm here for the prophet. Smiley

The lack of strict or absolute censorship is amazing, though it to an extent allows trolls to flex their muscles on the forum, but that's part of the fun and the drama
That's true, except I think the level of trolling perpetrated by TOAA has gone on far too long.  But even so, I've got him on ignore and don't have to read anything he writes.

I've always said that the relative freedom to say what you want on this forum is one of the things that attracted me to it in the first place.  On other forums you can't even use profanity, and while it's technically against the rules on bitcointalk it never gets enforced in practice.  That's a breath of fresh air, though I try not to abuse it.

The level of moderation is just right IMO.  I've had somewhat aggressive posts deleted before (usually in my early days on the forum), and I was probably out of line by writing them, so I learned to tone it down a lot.  Mods don't have an "anything goes" policy by any means, but they're definitely not as intrusive or power-trippy as some of the ones I've seen elsewhere.  I certainly appreciate that.

If you look at a lot of mainstream social media, they do a bit too well at trying to stop things like indirect hate speech and freedom of expression and this is something I think bitcointalk controls pretty well... While I don't appreciate hate speech, I think it's often best to leave it up and allow a community to attack that person or ideology rather than just remove it from the server and say "that's that mater resolved". (by indirect hate speech I mean when someone speaks out about something and it's due to a lack of public coverage that they feel the way they do) - it's obviously better to educate people more on an issue rather than just to delete it; but what mainstream social networks are about education these days?

But this is just an appreciation post for Theymos and the other mods who seem to have a very well balanced view on moderation of the forum (as balanced as I've seen anyway).

i don't endorse hate speach on any issue but sometimes you need a radical to get the message across and it helps to control ignorance

How much of a coincidence it is that this CLAIM made by the intial poster comes on a day when one of the most blatantly corrupt and undeniably SCAMMY deletes from any mod ever takes place.

I do NOT agree with the initial poster that in all cases the moderation is good and neutral or even allowing free speech. In this thread  https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/indisputable-evidence-that-one-mod-here-is-corrupt-and-needs-removal-5217537

There is clear and undeniable demonstration that MODS are corrupt and will delete the truth when it is in their interests of the interests of those they are aligned with.

That thread https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/indisputable-evidence-that-one-mod-here-is-corrupt-and-needs-removal-5217537 creates an irrefutable case that demonstrates the moderation here is OKAY until it effects them or their friends ( by them I mean mods). They are paid by sigs the same as everyone else here. You place those in danger or those friends that maintain their status quo then you will find the moderation is VERY CORRUPT and one sided. Perhaps NOT ALL mods but there are some that certainly want to hide up that they support scammers who in turn support them.

Debunk those points on that thread if you can. Read it all first.

Allow hate speech or criticism of 3rd parties that do not have any effect on them ... of course they don't give one fuck about that? haha how does that effect their bottom line here economically??

Sure it is good people can say what they like within reason. But when it is not hate speech and it is the truth about scamming and scammers and the mods deleted it then you know you have a serious issue.

Perhaps because the discussions mainly revolve around the technique of Bitcoin and many are interested in profit instead of supporting a particular theory or trying to direct opinions towards a wrong belief.

The problem that I think the forum is facing is fake news and FUD which so far is available to everyone & makes some people misuse it.
In general, the forum is balanced and gives everyone the freedom to write whatever they want without restriction.

I was kinda talking about what sets this forum apart from most social media... Fud is attached and unmoderated in most others and for almost everything a fact is something you've determined to be true 6+6 is 1012 but it's also 1210 (it's an awful example but without the subscript both are true in different cultures). I know what you mean but if we add too many controls it can get too out of hand.

@jetty, if we're not on firstName basis I assume that post wasn't for me 😂. But yeah moving topics as apprised to deleting them is a good way to go.

Nice hidden message you got there in the OP jackg. As soon as I saw the "sign" I copied it and pasted it in notepad. Grin

But I doubt the people who are intended to be the target population are going to have the wits to notice the sign.

And yet to some others the mods are all Nazis here  Grin.
Mods are paid with hate. Its part of the job. Cheesy

Hehe, I feel outed... 😂 Should've left a joke down there too.

I too love the freedom this forum offers! Once in a while someone suggests to restrict freedom of speech (often with arguments such as "this person is racist"), but I'm glad this forum is still as free as possible. I think by now it's safe to say theymos was a good choice, satoshi picked the right buy to run this forum.

I've recently become allergic to the word "offended". So many people are offended for less and less important things nowadays. I'd like to say: Stop being offended! Why would you choose to feel miserable because of something someone you don't even know said on the internet? If that's important to you, you should re-evaluate your priorities. Grow a thicker skin Smiley

Remember: you can't have the freedom to say what you want without other people having the same freedom!

You use the word you're allergic too quite a lot... You're going to start causing your reactions 😂.

But yeah I can see why it is. Mainly cryptocurrency guys are introverts for the most part and when stuff is written n down it can sometimes seem harsher than it is. Some other people just need external evaluation from strangers and they're always the ones to offend and cause problems too..
The lack of strict or absolute censorship is amazing, though it to an extent allows trolls to flex their muscles on the forum, but that's part of the fun and the drama, the mods and the admins keep to the rules, and as long as you're not breaking anyone of the rules, your freedom of speech goes unchallenged in the forum.

It would have been an entirely different ball game if theymos was in total control,(you understand what I mean)he allows the forum to run perfectly without much imposition.Since freedom of speech is unimpeded, if you don't like what a user posts you can ignore them, that's why that option was provided.

Yeah it's something that could've killed the forum off or at least surpress the drama and not let us find out information about users... I think a lot of funny conspiracies may have been propagated through here in the past.

I can't edit quotes anymore on my phone...

I'd disagree everyone's here for a profit, I don't think many of the long standing ones here are but I do think the thing that unites us is the interest in cryptos and their functions.

There are no leaders without haters.  Wink
I think that is a fact that happens to all famous people. And that is what happened to this forum leaders, its just that we cant forbid anyone to hate us, but we can still ignore it.

Whilst I mainly agree with the OP, I think that some moderation could do with a bit of fine tuning. The beginners' board contains too many threads about merit, scams and ripping off Bitcoin and the forum for minor earnings in my opinion. If beginner specific threads need to be posted somewhere, then put them on a sub-board, and lets get back to the introduction and training in Bitcoin specific topics for those who want to learn about the Bitcoin economy and its advantages.

Totally agree. Bitcointalk is one of the very few forums that I've been on that the admins never threw a tantrum(as far as I know?) just because someone said something bad about them, or something they disagree on. In contrast to admins on other forums that loves to flex their authority. Deeply hope that this doesn't change anytime soon.

And also, Bitcointalk is a perfect example that an online forum doesn't need a freakin token to work well. I'm looking at you, Steemit.
