10 BTC is about $7000.  That's not "peanuts" nor it setting up a simple subdomain redirect "a big contribution."
I'm very much certain that setting a subdomain exclusively for 1 altcoin is a big contribution, else nobody would be asking for it. 10 BTC is nothing IMO, the forum is generating more than enough for itself with ads.

The forum needs two factor authentication and better DDOS protection.  10 BTC (times N altcoins) would help with those efforts.
I don't see this version of the forum investing in 2FA, especially not since the beta is being worked on and thus those 'payments' would not help with those efforts.

If you're going to respond to me, please read and understand everything I've written, instead of isolating the proposal while pretending no rationale was provided (and exaggerating the cost while downplaying/ignoring the benefits).
I have read everything, it was not my intention 'to pretend'.

I wasn't actually arguing it was a good idea or not, just responding to the idea (incorrect IMO) that creating a section for a very small number of significant coins would require "a section per altcoin" (i.e., thousands).
Understood.

As Lauda said, it's no good to set a precedent for creating a section per altcoin. Then we'd need thousands of altcoin sections.
Thousands? No.

Very few coins rise to the level of having a significant community or have any lasting significance (most are effectively dead within a few months at most). How many have their own stackexchange? How many have the level of traffic and subscribers on their subreddits? How many are still in active development after 2.5 years?
If the coin has a significant community then they can surely move to a dedicated forum for that coin. I disagree with the expansion towards this direction in general.

I wasn't actually arguing it was a good idea or not, just responding to the idea (incorrect IMO) that creating a section for a very small number of significant coins would require "a section per altcoin" (i.e., thousands). Just as there are only a limited number of Bitcoin-related sections (mining, economics, etc.) and not a section for every conceivable Bitcoin-related topic, the forum admins could use their judgement as to which coins have a sufficient critical mass of interest and sustained relevance.

If Monero (or any altcoin) wants a monero.bitcointalk.org subdomain, its supporters must donate 10 BTC to Thermos.
10 BTC only, really? That's peanuts for such a big contribution from BTCT. AFAIK the forum doesn't need the money, so I don't see why the administration would want to do this.

And I provided another reason (which you ignored and claimed to not "see") in that alt subdomains would keep tangential content off the main Bitcoin site (making the alt ghetto less cluttered).

You also failed to respond to the competition argument, in which I described how Bitcoin Judas might be able to revive his ghost town rump forum by offering such a subdomain redirect service.

If you're going to respond to me, please read and understand everything I've written, instead of isolating the proposal while pretending no rationale was provided (and exaggerating the cost while downplaying/ignoring the benefits).

Is this a new business model for bitcointalk.org or an established one?
It is not established, there are not altcoin subdomains.

A cryptonote dedicated sub forum would be nice to see
No.

Let's use market-based mechanisms to solve this putative free rider problem.

If Monero (or any altcoin) wants a monero.bitcointalk.org subdomain, its supporters must donate 10 BTC to Thermos.

That's win/win, because the altcoin gets it's own dedicated high visibility/SEO friendly subdomain, while the mothership forum gets funding at the same time as tangential content self-segregates in areas outside of the altcoin ghetto.

If we don't do this, Altcoin Jesus may take the opportunity to profit from selling more bitcoin.com subdomains, as he's already created a casino and some other goofy shit on there.

I most emphatically would not support a section for each and every altcoin of no significance but the ones that rise to a level where such a a section would actually be useful are few and far between (maybe 5-10 at the most).

The forum is about bitcoin and anything not related to bitcoin = Altcoin which should belong to the Altcoins sections . If we create a sub-forum for Monero , we will have to create for every single altcoin out there if we want to be fair .

As Lauda said, it's no good to set a precedent for creating a section per altcoin. Then we'd need thousands of altcoin sections.

I do think that Monero is probably the best altcoin right now, since it actually does something major that Bitcoin doesn't, even if its scaling is terrible and it'll probably be replaced by a Bitcoin sidechain someday. Achieving Monero-style anonymity for everyone should be a long-term goal of Bitcoin.

Time will also tell how Monero's disinflation compares to Bitcoin's deflation when it comes to securing the network in the long-term, once fees exceed (and then dwarf) the block reward. That's one thing that Bitcoin can't do, even with sidechains. I'm really interested to see how things play out.

In theory Bitcoin could do that, if it were to break it's social contract and add a tail emission after block subsidies are at 0.

But I somehow doubt that it will ever materialize in the bitcoin protocol.

Thank you for making this clear.

Ok, I'm not going to wait for a Monero subforum to appear on Bitcointalk. I understand that this forum is and will stay Bitcoin-focussed and that's all right.  I respect that.

U can just use Monerotalk @ https://monerotalk.org if u wanna discuss Monero.

Monero is actually very unpopular here on the Bitcointalk

~CfA~

I don't use that forum actually. I prefer Bitcointalk because all the people are here. It's a better environment. Without privacy there is no freedom Smiley And Bitcointalk gives us all privacy by liberty.

This. It would create a precedent. New rules/features for the Alternate cryptocurrencies board should benefit/impact all altcoins or none. Just about anything else would not be impartial.

I'm in favor of this and I believe the general consensus would agree with this proposal.

Hell no.  Stop making assumptions when they're clearly not correct.

Monero is not a trash coin by any means, in fact it's quite the opposite. I'm not going to go into detail in this thread, of course.
I have said that I have nothing specific against Monero. My view spreads across almost all the altcoins.

The administrators share your sentiment, I suppose?
Practically almost no staff member cares about the altcoins (AFAIK), so I'd assume that the answer to that question is yes (even though it is unlikely that you would get a reply here).

The name of the forum is BITCOINtalk, not TRASHCOINtalk (nothing specific against Monero though).

Will there be a Monero subforum on the new Bitcointalk as countlessly requested by various forum members over the years? I'm in favor of this and I believe the general consensus would agree with this proposal.

Administrators, please share your thoughts.
