For Bitcoin itself, the most efficient miners are the S9 and R4 (equal more or less depending on specific S9 batch and individual unit varience), then the T9, then the Avalon 721/741, not sure after that.

There are BitFury models entering the market but they're new enough the actual performance is yet to be determined reliably.

With that said, mining Altcoins to convert to Bitcoin can be a lot more efficient in many or most cases right now - especially if you use the Baikal ASIC miner or possibly the Bitman L3+

One could use a pool with built in altcoin-to-Bitcoin conversion such as Nicehash, with the exchange losses figured into the effective hashrate. Behind the scenes, the CPU or GPU is actually mining some sort of altcoin but from the user's perspective, out comes Bitcoins.

People use the term bitcoin mining indiscriminately for mining any bullshit coin. There is no way in hell anyone can meaningfully mine bitcoin currently with a GPU let alone CPU. Additionally since there are very few how to get started guides in the modern era, people are reading stuff from 5 years ago thinking it's still relevant today. Make no mistake, one can only realistically mine bitcoin with ASICs and even then only the most efficient models are worth mining with.

Hello All, I got into bitcoin mining years ago and bought a Antminer S5 when they first came out and mined with it tell it died and just never looked into again, since then the bitcoin value has skyrocketed, so i checked my account to see how much i made over the life of that bitcoin miner and figured maybe i should use some of the bitcoins i have to invest in a new setup...

My question is what are some of the more efficient bitcoin miners out on the market right now? I did a quick google search and it seems google is bloated with people building multiple GPU servers like 6x480's or Ryzen CPU rigs to mine bitcoins. I was under the impression that CPU and GPU mining was a thing of the past... is it not?
