Curmudgeonly hardware guy
The S5+ is not an S5. They changed the string to lower the core voltage and increased board-level efficiency marginally, from about 0.5 to about 0.45 or so.

Hello All!

I am looking at buying some hardware at the moment and when looking for advice online everyone is recommending the Antminer7 due to its efficiency (mining potential Vs power draw). I really do not care about the power draw as we will not be paying the power bill, it is billed under a different financial area. Would this change the recommendation, I would have thought there was some kind of 19" rack mounted server style solution?

Thanks very much

So another 'free' power guy.

Free power is good.   But more to the game then free power.

1) How much juice do you have? 10 kwatts or 100kwatts or 200kwatts.
2) How much room do you have? 1000 square feet? 2000 square feet?
3) does noise matter?
4) this gear runs hot how do you cool it?

if your 'free' power limit is low  10kwatts would be low.

30 S-3's would run with 10kwatts slight down clock        you get 400gh each with about 12th max hash

16 S-5's would run with 10 kwatts no down clock            you get 1100gh each with about 17.6th max hash

6  S-7's  would run with 10 kwatts with a little over clock you get 4800gh each with about 28.8th max hash

30 s-3's used =  1800  you need 10 bitmain psus' = 1400  total  3200net   30eth cables and a switch   12th hash
16 s-5's used =  2400  you need   8 bitmain psus' = 1120  total  3512net   16 eth cables and a switch  17.6th hash
 6 s-7's new  =   3000  you need   6 bitmain psus' =  840  total   3840net    6 eth cables and a switch 28.8th hash

So a 10kwatt setup  from start is 3400 to 4000 usd

and s-7's look best to me if you are starting at the beginning

Op the wiki chart is out of date.  my numbers above are closer to real world.

keep in mind the wiki chart says the s-7 is more then 1500  usd it is 645 shipped new from china with a psu included or 500 without the psu

Thanks for the answers. That table puts the AntMiner S5+ at the top of the stack then based solely on the MHash/s value. The Spondoolies are a little behind and seem to be discontinued anyway. So hypothetically with a large budget and no worry of electrical draw the S5+ or a few of them would be my best option?

Theorethically, yes, altough the S5+ is almost the same as 3 S5's if i'm not mistaking...
They just connected 3 S5's, and added 2 extra boards if i remember correctly.

About the spondoolies-tech => read their twitter feed first: https://twitter.com/spondooliestech => they ceased operations this month.

Personally, if i had to start mining, i'd go for the antminer S7 (like philipma1957 said just above this post)... Even with free energy it's still a good idear to visit http://www.coinwarz.com/calculators/bitcoin-mining-calculator before you start buying hardware. Be advised that in a couple of months (http://www.bitcoinblockhalf.com/) the block reward will halve to 12.5 BTC/block.

I've seen a couple of people that couldn't ROI with free electricity when they factored in the costs of buying hardware, shelfs, cooling, PSU's, shipping, tax,...

I know you said to ignore energy consumption, but don't forget to keep in mind your electrical circuit setup.  I'm not sure how your "free power" setup is working, but remember you can only draw so much power from each electrical circuit before the fuse burns or the breaker trips.  I live in a hotel and have a miner setup there, but I only run an old S3 due to I don't want to draw attention to what I'm doing by tripping breakers.

I think this overview is what you're looking for:

It shows about all asics that ever hit the market...
