Which according to you is the most trusted exchange that trades in btc and altcoins? And why?
If you are in the US then I would say coinbase. However with that being said i don't think you should be holding a large amount of bitcoin at any exchange (or fiat for that matter either). Your best bet is to deposit smallish amounts of fiat into your account at a time, buy bitcoin, withdraw bitcoin and repeat until you have purchased all the bitcoin you wish to purchase.

If you had read all the replies above you would have seen this:

I think all these suggestions are the sites which deal in buying and selling bitcoins in usd, I was asking about the ones which deal in btc-altcoins and vice versa.

Cryptsy. Beside some minor issues with coin deposits and withdrawals - some wallet upgrades might take a lot of time to complete properly - I never had any issues with Cryptsy.
As second best, Poloniex - second only because they were already hacked (but repaid all coins lost) and are around for less time than Cryptsy, otherwise very good exchange.

upss i thought that Cheesy
for alt/BTC, i suggest you to use bittrex and cryptsy
i traded there for some time and everything went smoothly
poloniex is another nice exchange too

We usually think the most famous is the most trusted, but if an incident happened that often in there.

We should
Never keep a significant amount of coins on any exchange. They are infamous for disappearing overnight.
yeah we usually think like that
biggest exchange = trusted exchange
but everything changed since gox case

agree, exchanger just for trade, not for store bitcoin (and another valuable coins) there

Hm. How much would be safe to keep for trading in Mintpal? 0.1 - 0.2 BTC  Huh

Any amount would be safe as long as you didn't share your login credentials to someone else. To ensure maximum security, you also need to enable 2FA in your account

What are some deposit options for mintpal?  Do they accept USA customers?

I've always used Mintpal, and I'm a longstanding member over there. I have never had a single problem with them. I think mintpal has a better interface, faster and smoother compared to other exchanges.

imo, for now is bitstamp. many people trade bitcoin there
you can check their daily volume here : http://markets.blockchain.info/

but don't store your valuable coin there for period of time
nobody know what will happen in the future, like recent mt.gox case

No one is answering your question because there is no answer, lol. All of the altcoin exchanges are a little bit shady.

Having said that, I've never had any problems with Cryptsy, Mintpal or BTC-e but I haven't traded alts in a couple of months. Never keep a significant amount of coins on any exchange. They are infamous for disappearing overnight.
