Why would theymos changing a value be a "waste"? It's as simple as theymos setting his merit to 21M. Done.
There's no sMerit that would have be used for that and those Merits wouldn't exist and thus are not "taken away" from anyone else.

It's a fun little detail. Why does your postcount show leet when you reach 1337 posts? It's a waste of programming, nobody gains something from it.
Or maybe easter eggs are what makes things interesting. Small details that don't make a huge difference over all, but go a long way.
You are right if Theymos just will increase the points for certain account that will be totally fine . My comment was for the idea of we users use our merit to + a sleep account .

Goodbye, Z.
Suggestion: Bump Satoshi to 20999999.9769 Merit. Change the software to limit Merit to 20999999, thus preventing any more sMerit from being sent to Satoshi.
This however would mean people couldn't merit the posts by satoshi. Thus those posts also wouldnt show up in the merit stats.
If we see merit as measure of quality, then those toplists are the lists of the best threads and posts on bitcointalk. I'd consider a few posts by satoshi as some of "the bests posts on bitcointalk".
They should have a chance to show up there and get listed.

It is a waste for members to send their sMerit to Satoshi when it could be used to improve the quality of posting by sending it to other active members.
Sending merits for exceptional posts sets examples of what "high quality" posts should look like.
Newbies can read those posts and learn how to improve their own posts by doing so. You can improve via merit sent to others, learn by observing.

What a waste of merit points, and an indication of a lack of understanding about the purpose of merit points. I thought they were to encorage an improvement in the quality of posting.

I am sure you have good intentions , But why give a sleep account merit ! It would be waste of merit and could be more helpful to give them to people that really in need of them and deserve them.

I jokingly suggested that, and think it's unlikely theymos would agree/set them to this value. Though I'd still find it a nice little gesture.
The argumentation against however, I don't really understand.

Satoshi did not change your life a lone I am sure he  changed the life of every person in this forum too . And I do not think he really need merit points to show that Smiley

On another note - there is a growing body of opinion that Bitcoin was a group project, and was created by the Fed as an experimental currency. That explains why there are limits imposed that prevent it from every becoming a major world payment service. Do you really want to give your merit points to the US Fed? Smiley

But really, is there a point in pilling an account that was last active 7years ago with Merits other than emotional reason that he was founder? The user could even be dead and what is the use on the account then? I guess that was what Theymos thought and didn't inflate Satoshi merit score?

I asked these questions with a sense of responsibility.

There is no actual use of giving Satoshi the merit points other than the emotional satisfaction of the act. His account is kinda locked and there is no direct way for him to access it without verifying it with Theymos or the staff. And there is no point in hoarding merit points anyway. Satoshi's contribution to the Bitcoin world would not increase nor decrease with a low merit point. However, it could be a boost in morale for the people to see it happen.

Eh, why not? Not like he is going to ever use it now.

You can't give your Merit points away. And as per Theymos you can only give away from what you are allowed to give away, sort of like a merit balance. This depends on your activity. Go read theymos's post about it.
Lol, I thought the motion was for 21M sMerits for Satoshi. *facepalm*

I don't think anyone has 21m merits on them anyway and a sat would be too low a payment should such sales be allowed. (which it should NEVER be allowed).

you got it wrong, I didn't mean to sell for 1 Satoshi, I meant for Satoshi Nakamoto.

Well I can simply not post "I agree" but It is evident that Bitcoin is mother of all cryptocurrencies and more importantly the founder deserves a non-decayable salute . There may be misuses of bitcoins in drugs and other bad stuffs but what "matters" to me is it has "changed" lives of people on this earth including me . I think I have already given him a positive trust , it doesn't matter what difference it makes but it will definitely add something and I am going to give him Merits .

Update : I have sent a merit : https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.29479

Why not both sMerit points and Merit points? It wouldn't make much difference anyway, though no one would see the sMerits.

You can add 50 points every 30 days and that will stack up to 21M some day. Roll Eyes

(Satoshi doesn't need merit points to prove himself worthy)

Merits have got nothing to do with points especially for new members.

I definitely agree with you, or with Lutpin. Satoshi, being the founder, should have that much merit.

Any idea why s/he has only 360? Is it because of the number of activity?

It is because the merit points is at default based on the rank they got before merit system introduced.

This is the gem that i found on theymos' topic about merit

Quote
Trivia:

For current members, your initial merit score is equal to the minimum required to your rank. Of that, a certain amount (less than the usual half) is spendable. The spendable amount was calculated based on your current rank and the number of activity points you earned in the last year. A Legendary member who hasn't posted in the last year would still be Legendary, but would not have any spendable merit.

Original idea Lutpin.

This is my appeal to the Bitcoitalk lords and lord of lords Theymos, to consider giving Masutā Satoshi 21million Merits that will never decay.

Please, everyone that can make this a reality, push for this. This guy changed my life.

PS: Don't +Merit me. Hit the link and send a +Merit to Lutpin's original post in the link above.
