What name would you give to the smallest unit of bitcoin (0.00000001)?

Cent.

And shift the decimal point six places so that it matches regular currencies. No regular currency is divisible to eight places. We talk about thousands or millions or billions of dollars or francs or euros, not megadollars or petafrancs. Millibits or microbits might work for geeks but not for average people.

There are a lot of people who won't pay triple digits for a bitcoin. If we simply shifted the decimal place over 6 spots, it would remove a psychological barrier that should allow bitcoin to rapidly reach a market equilibrium price and then have some kind of price stability going forward.

Is there a client today that can do this? How about one that does it by default?

You can set the official client to show balances in mBTC or uBTC.
