If they remade it today they probably would make an action scifi movie out of it. David Bowman would be gunning down HAL 2000 with an M16 and then go after the Monolith with a rocket launcher. The Star Child would be toast before the credits rolled.
In other words, you're saying studio driven material doesn't hold a candle to auteur driven material? If so, and I do agree for the most part, then you're implicitly saying that Hollywood material, and even more so, Hollywood blockbusters are often garbage.
Yes, they are, very often.
It's almost unbelievable $100+ million blockbusters, many times with great actors and directors, with so much obvious plot holes, I simply don't understand how this is possible!
It's because studios want as many people as possible to see the movie, and in order for that to happen, you have to make a movie that appeals to the least common denominator. The best films are the ones where the director doesn't really care about box office numbers, and just makes the film he wants to make, without studio meddling. Design by an artist always beats design by committee when it comes to art.
I know producers get the final cut, but even so, it would be so easy to fix so many movies out there, sorry I can't give specific examples at the moment, you're a movie guy I'm pretty sure you understand what I mean.
I rarely think in terms of fixing movies. I understand what you're saying, but I come at the whole thing differently.

I agree. I enjoy many of them. But that's not the point. You'll likely never enjoy what I call heightened cinema until you start exploring other areas.
