I just completed the MtGox Bankruptcy Claim via the Kraken website and I'm sure I'm not the only person who has filed a claim over the past week or so.

It was a relatively straightforward process, although I was a bit hazy about which bank account information I supplied to MtGox as part of the verification process, but other than that, it was pretty standard and pleasingly quick.

It took me back to the days when the price was getting hammered, fear was rampant and then the seemingly inevitable failure of Gox occurred. I also remembered a YouTube song from the time, googled it and found it still up but with only 46000 hits:

I'm not saying it is a great musical composition, but I do say that it has stuck in my head as a memory relating to the Gox incident which followed other chaos including Bitfunder going under and TradeFortress collapsing.

Just wondering how many other folks are filing the MtGox claim form and what memories they might recall from those dark days?

I had enough trouble remembering my log in and password!  I wasn't sure how much I was claiming for exactly, so had to go back and look how much was in my account, I am quite lucky that I didn't have too much in there when they went under.

The claim forms were pretty simple in my opinion, and the 2 levels of verification required are pretty easy too.  I live in Germany though and I am not sure if I need to do the 3rd level for the Gox calim or not.. Then I need to start messing around with photos or photo IDs, that would be a bit more annoying!

One strange memory for me is that my browser still remembers Gox everytime I go to bitcoinity to check the price.  Then I get a message saying that they don't know how I got there but it isn't available anymore Smiley

There's no doubt that list of people who have been screwed by the bankruptcy of MtGox/dealings of Karpales is long.

Obviously I cannot help you in anyway at all as I'm thousands of miles away and the people you need to speak with to escalate your claim would be Kraken and/or the MtGox trustee. I wasn't asked for any data from my Yubikey, but I did need it to login to my Kraken account as I had enabled it for two-factor. MtGox I recall used their own similar but different Yubikey for their exchange and as my universal Yubikey didn't work I didn't bother setting up any two-factor with MtGox.

Check the link to the Kraken thread here on the forum (listed above), you'll see that a number of people are having difficulty receiving emails from the MtGox trustee and that if you inform Kraken that you have this or other similar issues, they'll add your name to a list to be taken into consideration when the process shakes out. If that's all you do, at least your name is in the hat and it might buy you some time? You won't be the only person with an 'alternative lifestyle' or 'verification issues' but without sounding trite the onus will still be on you to prosecute your claim with them, you know how officialdom works, if you're not active in the process you tend to get crushed by the gears.

In the meantime, you might strike the mother lode out there in Northern California and all this might just fade away...  Wink

I'm currently waiting on verification through Kraken.  I imagine that a lot of people are going to get screwed (more) by this whole mess.  For example, I do not have a residential address.  I am homeless by definition.  I live in a tent full-time and make a living prospecting for gold in the northern California mountains.  My only address is a PO box.  Any financial institution will not accept a PO box as proof-of-address.  So what am I to do?  Also, my yubikey is in storage about a 23 hour drive away.  Is it necessary to have my Yubikey serial number when I submit my claim???  Who in the world can answer these questions?...

Also, I had a large balance of USD when the theft took place.  Mtgox said nothing was wrong and I ended up buying bitcoin when the price fell.  Now I am stuck claiming what I had when Mtgox shut things down rather than what I had when the theft took place.  They investigating entity failed to take this into account.  Also, there was a large number of USD withdrawals by Karpeles and other insiders after everything was shut down.  For several weeks afterwords!!!  This is criminal.  But no one is going after these criminals, they are even asking for Karpeles to help!  What a joke this is.  I 100% support the bitcoin bounty that is out for the assassination of that fat f@ck.

Thanks for your reply. By way of clarification I'm in Australia so not subject to any restrictions or difficulties that some people in certain US states might be experiencing.

It was a long while ago when I registered with Kraken but from memory I provided a scanned copy of my passport information page (I recall uploading it through their secure server), my driving licence which has my photo, name and address on it and probably a copy of a recent bank statement (transactions redacted) also confirming my name, address and bank details. I cannot recall whether I had these copies notarised by a Justice of the Peace (I think your equivalent is a Notary Public?) but here it is very easy to get documents notarised free of charge at the local public library.

That was sufficient to verify me to Level 3. Not sure if this information copy/pasted below is visible on the Kraken site if you are not registered with them:

MtGox Bankruptcy Claims

If you had a balance with MtGox when they went bankrupt, you can file a bankruptcy claim through Kraken. The claim and payout service through Kraken is available in all areas of operation, including all US states.

Creditors claiming funds with Kraken can expect the following benefits:

100,000 KFEE credits redeemable for up to $1 million in free trading volume at the lowest fee tier of 0.1%
Creditor claim and payout support including live chat and email
Option to receive funds in the form of bitcoin
An easier and more convenient process from claim to payout

Please note that if you don’t file through Kraken and instead elect to make your claim through the alternative system provided by the MtGox trustee, we will not be able to assist you with the failures or problems with their system and will not be liable in any way for the failures or problems with their system.
Claim your MtGox account

Click the button below to get started with your claim. You will be briefly directed to the site provided by the MtGox trustee so you can indicate that you will be filing your claim through Kraken. Then you will be directed back to Kraken to complete your claim on our site. Your Kraken account must be verified to Tier 2 or higher to make a claim. For residents of US states who can only pre-verify their accounts at Tier 2 or higher, this is sufficient to use the claim and payout service through Kraken.

You'd also better investigate this quickly if you're hoping to make a claim, I recall seeing that claims need to be lodged maybe by the 29th April (or 29th May?) but I cannot now seem to confirm that date on any correspondence or accounts I can access. I've been contacted via email by the MtGox trustees who are looking after the bankruptcy claims on and off over the last nine months or so, so I am assuming that you've also received emails from them or if not you can still lodge a claim and provide particulars on the Kraken site or on the MtGox site. I chose to register my claim through Kraken as I've had an account with them for a year or so, they've always been very efficient in my opinion and being verified with them, it makes it easier for me to receive any funds that a successful bankruptcy claim may elicit.

It's also worth checking out the Kraken thread on this forum, Dargo and his team are quite quick to respond:

Good luck with it all.

What did Kraken require regarding identification?  Did you have to fax a copy of your identification?  What docs did they require regarding proving your residency?

I know that Kraken is not licensed as a currency exchange in California and a number of other states.  No one in most states can get past level one verification the last time I heard, due to these licensing problems-- I don't know how this affects the claim process.
