I don't think it is a good practice to extend the bounty like that. You promised 72 hour contest, so you should finish it by announcing the winners and then starting another contest for another bounty, but stick to the original terms you have promised, otherwise you could just extend the terms indefinitely and never pay the bounty. I understand that you didn't get the participation in your pool as you have hoped for by announcing the bounty, otherwise what you doing is changing the rules after the "race" is over.
