)I think it's just a straight 24 hours, since it seems to creep down the day after lots of activity.
MtGox local time appears to be US Eastern time, that's the local time of the transactions it displays.

The number of bitcoins traded will likely not increase much, but the number of dollars likely will.

What does the volume represent (i guess it's the number of btc exchanged), and mostly in which period? 1 hour? 1 day?
I'm trying to figure out the liquidity of the market
