yes you can choose not only exchange but also type of fiat currency, euro/dollars as well...
and you can set 2 "count" to see price of btc both in euro or in dollars! (upper right corner) , but in the options is all explained

I checked bitstamp.net and the website is down. Is this something to do with Multibit not showing amount in USD as Multibit 0.5.18 which I am using is directly bitstamp dependent on price???

EDIT: Now its fixed and showing it, still the question remains valid.

I suppose you can choose what website to use ? (to check the price) on Multibit ? If it's the case then It's not showing because Bitstamp.net was down like you said (or at least the API was) .
Simply try to use another website if one of them is not working , they can't get down all at the same time .
