Yes you can create new wallets via file > new/restore, enter a filename for the new wallet, click next and follow on-screen instructions for the rest.

You can download the latest Electrum version (version 3) which provides Segwit bech32 addresses by default and creates a wallet for it. All you need to do is:

1) Back your current wallet and it's seed. (legacy bitcoin wallet)
2) Download electrum 3 and create a new Segwit wallet (Click on Standard wallet --> Segwit)
3) Back the new Segwit wallet's seed and wallet as well and note the seed down
4) Now you can switch between the wallets by going to File --> Open, select either of the wallet and you can choose to operate between both.

In this case you need not ever have to worry about having 2 electrum installations or versions on your PC. Just have version 3.0 and switch between accessing wallets.

i'm finally feeling squeezed enough by the fees that i'm thinking of upgrading to the new bech32 wallet. can i just install it and generate new wallets on the same pc without worrying about my 2.9.0 wallet files? i'd rather not just sweep the seeds into new wallets due to privacy/utxo selection issues. prefer to keep them all working side by side if possible.

i tend to drag my feet on wallet upgrades due to paranoia over this sort of stuff....
