Crypto investing is definetly not for newbie but kudos to you for showing interest you never know you could be good at crypto investing depending on how you are doing it. I am an early adoptor of crypto I had btc in 2013. I do not think the asset will see its all time high  ever again nor wiill altcoins, some are actually on the "brink of extinction" , I would say maybe start looking in investing in crypto as cfds its proven most ptofitable for me recently but the ball is in your caught [NFA]

I am a newbie and would like to invest $1000 to start. I have read that I should put 40 percent into bitcoin and diversify the other 60 percent. I need opinions, advice, and anything from those with experience of positive value. Smiley
I don't know who gave you that idea but I don't think that's a great idea because that's no need to invest 60% in shitcoins and I guess your advice was gotten from a newbie as well because so many other persons who did invested in altcoins years back are wishing that they invested all in bitcoin.
I think you should invest all in bitcoin and always remember that nothing is guaranteed  in cryptocurrency but if you're holding  for long time, then you don't actually have anything to scared of but rather relax and keep investing.

Except you want to go into day trading, you shoukd understand  that bitcoin and cryptocurrency at large isn't a get rich quick scheme not even trading which has the highest risk rate.
I will also advice that you spend more time in getting the knowledge  rather than wanting to invest now.

Ever since I joined this forum I wanted to buy some coins and invest.

So I currently purchased ATM tokens with some dollars.I don't know if I can benefit but I have no help in this matter.I bought it on my own.

But I also know that investing requires full experience.

Why not just try Bitcoin to invest and look for personal experience and investment knowledge in Bitcoin if it builds in the long term, why do you prefer tokens?, or at least try investing in Altcoins if you think Bitcoin prices are too expensive. In fact, you can get profits from Bitcoin if you are good at analyzing the market and targeting the market.

Why not try investing in Altcoins that will give you full returns, such as the great altcoins Ethereum and also Bnb, and if you are looking to profit from long-term investment both altcoins are good to buy, and we think you will get the returns you want. or you can choose some of the other top Altcoins for you to make as Investment assets.
top altcoins are also not a guarantee that investment will be safe. The case for the FTT token of the FTX exchange platform was also in good standing before the tragedy.
if you want to invest long term, just focus on Bitcoin. beginners better speculate there. while practicing patience waiting for the moment of the price increase.
I don't see all bad altcoins. but more on the risk in the long term. unless you want to get profits in a short time. but it also depends on your skill, not your luck.

I am quite confused why people are saying that diversification won't help, I am a altcoin investor and I have invest in over 10 different altcoins since the beginning of the bear market in 2022, I have made more money from altcoins because almost a the altcoins did well, few did 5x and one did 10x, this is in a bear market, if you know how to pick them right you will have good results.

It is true that, some investors have achieved great profits from investing in altcoins as you have said and there is experience for yourself with the condition that if we know how to choose them correctly, you will get good results. The most common reason for basic Altcoins is that they have a lower market capitalization and trading volume, tend to be more volatile and carry higher risks compared to established cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. While some altcoins may experience significant gains, many others may also suffer heavy losses or fail to gain traction in the long term.

Seen from saturation and market competition. The altcoin market is extremely saturated, with thousands of projects competing for attention and investment. While a new altcoin may offer profit potential, it is very important to assess the project's uniqueness, market fit, and long-term sustainment. Most altcoins may struggle to gain widespread adoption or face challenges in differentiating themselves from competitors and additional Facts for altcoins that I can share here.

If you are still a beginner, it's better for you to choose investments in safe positions, especially with a fund of $ 1000. I think this is a large fund for a beginner. I just want to give a little illustration that bitcoin is the crypto solar system, so here you can conclude that bitcoin will provide benefits in the future. So I think you should invest more in Bitcoin than altcoins. Granted, diversification in investments can help reduce overall risk, but having specific confidence in your investment assets can certainly be the right strategy too.

Make Bitcoin Investment a long term investment because it has proven to be the most powerful crypto asset at the moment. The rest you can invest in ETH too because ETH is the second Coin after Bitcoin, Ethereum has become the basis for many innovative projects and smart contracts of course have a great future. Apart from that you can also invest in BNB, because in my opinion this is an interesting altcoin, especially because it is used in the Binance Exchange ecosystem. So far BNB has performed well. In conclusion you have to share your $ 1000 funds into the three coins, my advice is 70% for Bitcoin 30% for BNB and ETH. Hope it is useful.

So I certainly invite you to stay where I am. I am a bitcoin investor myself so definitely invest in bitcoin to get success. And if you leave the entire wealth in Bitcoin for a long year then you will surely get the benefit.

Totally agree with you that Bitcoin is the only crypto currency in the current situation where you can do all your investments without any fear. The current conflict between SEC and Binance exchanges is getting prolonged due to which the prices of almost all altcoins have fallen significantly. There is uncertainty everywhere for all people who have invested in altcoins instead of Bitcoin.

SEC has declared more than sixty coins as securities including some of the most famous and top coins in the market. With the SEC objecting to these coins, you can imagine how far the prices of these coins could fall. Many people have invested in all these coins. Now all the investors are worried.

At the moment, those who have capital invested in Bitcoin are satisfied. So you should invest in Bitcoin as it is the only crypto currency that can protect your capital.

The motive you want to invest is very good but 40% bitcoin investment will lead you to prosperity. But the remaining 60% decided to invest in altcoins. But if you look past the altcoins life is short because almost all altcoins absorb people's wealth. So I would say you can invest in Bitcoin so the risk will be very less.
You are one of many people who have suffered losses due to wrong moves. Altcoins have a risk of 90%+ so chances of lok sun are high I am an investor myself.

So I certainly invite you to stay where I am. I am a bitcoin investor myself so definitely invest in bitcoin to get success. And if you leave the entire wealth in Bitcoin for a long year then you will surely get the benefit.

that's good advice, but I had a newbie ask me about Bitcoin investing. he came with a sizable capital. I give advice that is more or less the same as what you said to invest at the beginning with a small nominal first. but he has other thoughts with bigger capital will also get bigger profits.
he did not consider the greater risk either. he indeed started with a small amount, but he wants to always increase the amount so he makes purchases gradually every time he sees the value of his investment assets decrease.
Many beginners are very careless in financial management to invest, they don't have the patience to buy coins at bear market prices and they are not ready for the risks of investing in crypto so they always buy again when their investment decreases.

So it is very important that every beginner has crypto investment knowledge because it is in vain for them to have a lot of investment funds because they will definitely lose if there is no effect in managing investment funds.

Do you already understand enough crypto investment? I think since you are a newbie, you should focus on learning first. The focus shouldn't for gaining as much as profits. $1000 is too big money to use for your start, just use smaller amount of money. $100 is enough for your early investment, the focus is on the learning. But if you think that you already have enough knowledge and experience, $1000 is no problem to use as your capital.

Yes, your advice is much suitable for the person who is recently involved in the line of cryptos. I you have sound knowledge about crypto trading, then there is no matter what coin you choose and how much invest in. But If have amount and think to invest in the trading, well, you should learn and gain experience first than take your decision. Because without a detailed knowledge about the fundamental & technical analysis, risk assessment etc, neither you examine the behavior of crypto market and nor the chance to earn money from it. So, do your homework completed all the way, Start your trading with low value tokens rather than towards big. Further, you must kept in mind about the loss first than profit.

It depends on you, it is not a must. You can use 100% on Bitcoin, or you can diversify to top altcoins. The point is you choose the most recommended coins to invest only. Top altcoins such as BTC, ETH, BNB, ADA, SOL, MATIC, TRX, and DOT are the most recommended coins for investment.

Some people make money in investing altcoins, I see altcoins investment as luck and it should never be an investment one needs to rely on so much because any thing can happen along the line. It is too risky to make investment in several altcoins,  it is not certain if one should invest in 10 different altcoins like what @z390 said all the investment will come out all well. It is so important to be conscious how we invest in altcoins,  before now we saw how lots of people lose their money investing in altcoins.  It has tendency to crash at any given time.
Some altcoin have real use cases and are built on alternative to bitcoin. I know a lot of people are skeptical about altcoin especially when it comes to investing - but however you shouldn't assume that all altcoin are the same.

I'm not completely ignoring the potential of altcoins even though I don't have a large percentage of them in my current portfolio. Obviously you can ignore all altcoin because of your doubts, but you shouldn't force other people to have the same mindset as you.

Diversifying is good when you know what you are doing and you are unsure of the market conditions.
If you think the market is too volatile then you can consider diversifying.
But if we are in a bull market and you know bitcoin is the only one showing better gains then investing in altcoins would be a bad idea.
Even if you decide to deiversify then a lot would depend on which coins you choose to diversify in.
I would always keep 20% of the capital to buy more later and invest the rest 80%.
So if I were at your place then I would go for 50% bitcoin, 30% altcoin (mostly 20% ETH and 10% BNB) and the rest 20% in fiat.

Yes, I approve with your decision. Investing in bitcoin is a smart idea because you may keep your coin and wait for its price to soar regardless of how the market declines. Due to the uncertainty of the results, investing in other cryptocurrencies is comparable to gambling. If you're a newbie, it's important to complete your study before making any investments because you run the danger of losing money if you don't have the correct attitude and can't keep a bitcoin for an extended period of time.
It's not a bad idea to invest $1,000, and you may even invest more, but only if you can be confident that you won't regret it afterwards. Trust me, you will like investing in bitcoin.

When it comes to investing, it's important to remember that everyone's financial situation and goals are different. For newbies, if they are really interested to invest, at first consider the profit loss about the cryptocurrencies. Secondly, make detailed overview i.e financial techniques, risk taking and market analysis ability, than take a decision to start with small amount in BITCOIN or any other crrypto. Also conduct thorough research on different investment options that align with your goals and risk tolerance.. Continue learning about investing strategies, asset classes, and economic indicators to make informed decisions. It's important to adapt and refine your investment strategy as you gain more knowledge and experience.

The best advise for you is to make your mind up on yourself to research and know the side to take in your investment but surely bitcoin like have been suggested to is the most guarantee of them. I suggest 50% of your investment capacity should go for bitcoin. Btc and Ethereum are the best you can invest in , most altcoins are like gambling away your money. Bitcoin will rise again and go above the current ATH, this has been proven with history but many other altcoins may not do that again after this bear. An investor can only make profit in hodling if the coin has the volatility to go above initial ATH.
Be wise with your $1,000 or you could start with lesser amount to get some experience except if you already have more cash in reserve.

I believe asset diversification is good regardless of your greater interest in bitcoin.

Moreover you are free to build your own portfolio without being influenced by others even if some users disagree with you. Don't you think that your losses and gains are not their responsibility? So do your part right - get profit - consider it at your own risk. Some altcoin perform well in terms of returns, sure - but you have to have the mindset that they are not investment assets worth holding for long term. So take your profits when you got it- do it at your own risk, no matter what anyone says.

Facts about altcoins that I know.

1. Most of the old altcoins that did very well in past bull market will never reach their all time high again.

2. Majority of those altcoins are created for short-term gain in mind, the devs never wanted to push them further, they just want to make some noise to attract people and exit liquidity on them.

3. If altcoin investment is a must for you, it's better to invest in new altcoins, at least they've never been pumped and dumped, make sure they have the hype though, use cases, and co.

Welcome to the Forum Smiley.

I will only share my own experience and what I did from the start. I also have some money when I first started involving myself into crypto (around 3rd quarter of 2017) but as a newbie at that time, I chose to do some research, learned the basics of crypto especially Bitcoin, watched videos etc. etc. and while I'm learning, I already know which coins should I invest at that time but to be safe since it's my first time, I only invested into Bitcoin then expanded, saved some money and tried to invest into other coins.

$1000 is a huge amount (at least for me) but instead of investing into cryptocurrency first, at least gain some knowledge and make some research and learn at least the basics as well. It will help you decide which coins will you buy. Well, if you're really that eager to invest into cryptocurrency, then I suggest 40% into Bitcoin and 60% into Ethereum. This is a safer approach since these 2 coins are at the top 2 spot for a very long time already. If you want a riskier approach, then maybe try to buy those at the top 10 coins, but I suggest research first. This is my opinion only and I know other users here have different opinions.

Good Luck.

LogitechMouse thanks for sharing your experience you have said it all, it just like my first investment I went to a friend to guide me on crypto to invest, he advised me as a newbie not to rush into investment without thorough research about the coin to invest, and I did exactly what he said and it favours me.

Had it been that I did a lot of research and watching YouTube videos about the coins to invest I would have lost a lot of money because I later realized that the coin I had wanted to buy was a bad idea so I was very happy I didn't bought it.

You need to know that the bal is in your court so whatsoever way you want to diversify your cryptocurrency portfolio is left to you. When you want to invest, it is always good for you to make some goof research about where you are putting your money before you make any endeavour to invest whether for a long term holding or a short time holding.

Crypto is very versatile so you need to be ready to be patient enough to hold so that you will not going to make unnecessary loses that could make you think cryptocurrency investment is a scam. Since you want to invest in altcoins too, try and do diligent research for a profitable holdings.

Those amount is still a good start placing those 60 percent in other coins seems like a risk but of course with a higher reward currently we are in the stable support of the bitcoin and as long as early before the halving comes it's ideal to accumulate as possible. We know that the bitcoin price movement the altcoins follow seems you are trying to make a play safe for a long term in bitcoin and make risk profit of 60 to the alt because of good return but check again the rainbow chart there's a chance it will dump again in halving so until when you will hold.

I will advise you to Invest all in bitcoin and see the out come within two to three years.

There is no doubt that Bitcoin is the king of the cryptocurrency market. An investment made here can prove to be an excellent investment. The price of Bitcoin is very high compared to other coins in the cryptocurrency market.Investment in Bitcoin also requires a large amount of money due to its high value. In Bitcoin, where the risk of loss is minimal, the rate of profit is also minimal.

An investment of $1000 in Bitcoin is unlikely to yield a good return.Instead, choose a variety of coins among the top and best coins on the market that cost less than a $1.I think investing in small altcoins can be a great decision, but even there, it should be considered that instead of investing in one coin, one should divide his capital in different coins.

Personally, I do not think that $1,000 is a good amount to achieve returns from investing in crypto, unless he has a long breath to wait for a jump in prices to give him a multiplier of thousands of times.  This explains the desire to invest most of the amount in alternative currencies that may provide opportunities in this way.
It would be better to try to invest the amount in other sectors to achieve small benefits in the hope of reaching a good amount capable of achieving good returns.  Of course, investing in Bitcoin is considered the best, since it is a valuable asset.

I don't believe in diversification in the cryptocurrency industry. Bitcoin is the king and it moves the market. There is no time that bitcoin will be very down while altcoins will be very high, except for calculated pumps.
It is either you are investing in bitcoin or altcoins.
An investment in bitcoin can be called an investment and you can do so with upto 60% and then the remaing percentage will be for altcoin gambling. Yes,I called it gambling because they can make you fast or mare you faster.

The real diversification is when you investment in cryptocurrency and diversify to Gold, Real Estate etc.

To begin a bitcoin journey, $1000 is a respectable sum of money.Hope you can afford to lose this amount of money you are trying to invest in the crypto industry, nevertheless. Although you are a newbie, but I don't know how experienced you are in the cryptocurrency market despite been a newbie. If you are a complete beginner, I would advise focusing exclusively on Bitcoin only and to avoid any altcoin investments for the time being because you might not be able to conduct adequate research on them. It is a good idea to diversify in order to reduce your risks, but failing to have a thorough understanding of the other side may result in a significant risk.

If I were you as a Newbie, I would invest  the all $1,000 in bitcoin, but if I were to gamble in another way as a beginner, I would just invest 5% or 10% in alternative cryptocurrencies to put myself on the safe side. I'm not promising you a profit from Bitcoin, but I can guarantee you that the risk may not be as great as altcoins from my experience.

I am a newbie and would like to invest $1000 to start. I have read that I should put 40 percent into bitcoin and diversify the other 60 percent. I need opinions, advice, and anything from those with experience of positive value. Smiley
First of all congratulations you can start investing with a thousand dollars. And investing 40% in Bitcoin and remaining 60% in other currencies can be a good decision for you. But if you want you can rotate your investment percentage i.e. you can invest 60 percent in Bitcoin and the remaining 40% in other platforms. Because investing in Bitcoin is relatively safer than investing in other currencies.

OP $1000 is one hell of a cash, if I were you I'd split the money into two equal parts, 50/50. Invest $500 on Bitcoin and the other half I'll send to the bank.
It is important to know that you should never invest money you can't afford to lose, the money you can afford to invest depends on how comfortable you are with risk taken, that's another one you need to consider. Since is your first investment never make it your last out of desperation, let patience do the work.

Everything also depends on the capital you have, if you have additional capital every month, we can gradually increase our investment in a consistent amount. this can grow the investment quite well in the long term. What this means is that you should stay away from them by all means possible although that doesn't mean you should just invest all your capital at ones into the market. The DCA pattern is the best strategies that is good to apply,  this is directly, is to hold for long and DCA till the next bull run. when the price of bitcoin drops,it is a good time to increase DCA buying and return to normal when the price is out of limit or start to recovery and the long term holder enjoy. Investing is a job, and like any job, it requires practice, skill development, and constant training.

Always be careful that investing in altcoin makes it riskier so be mindful about it, and before you invest you should consider researching so you can expect the possible things that might happen once you invest in crypto.

if you see OP's initial capital, I will put it all in Bitcoin. like you said altcoins are too risky, even if it is for someone who is quite experienced in the market. especially for a beginner who will be more likely to choose an altcoin based on advice or marketcap.

Diversifying wont lessen the risk you can have in investing in cryptocurrency but then that is a good way of handling your money, we should not take all our money in crypto 40-60 is already a great percentage to invest in crypto.

Always be careful that investing in altcoin makes it riskier so be mindful about it, and before you invest you should consider researching so you can expect the possible things that might happen once you invest in crypto.

I suggest you need to learn first about cryptocurrency, our suggestions or the comments here are not enough, try to explore more and know some advantages and disadvantage of investing in crypto.

I think the question here is about the priorities of the investor. It all depends on what he appreciates more and what he counts on. Investing in bitcoin, as your post suggests, is quite reliable, although not as profitable, compared to investing in small altcoin projects. However, for many novice investors, the main thing is not a big income, but the reliability of the investment, certain guarantees that their money will not be lost. Whereas dividing capital into different coins remains more risky and requires more knowledge and experience in order not only to save but also multiply the body of investment.

Starting with $1,000 is a nice move. Op why do you want to use 40 percent only in bitcoin and use the 60 percent for another investment. I don't buy that idea. I will advise you to Invest all in bitcoin and see the out come within two to three years.

Diversifying is a good things but it's not riskless. Take your time and dyor on he projects you are investing in.

When you do what everybody is doing you can't stand out of the crowd. Majority of the speculators in the space are diversifying into different altcoins that get them burn when the market tanks. If you join the party you won't be any different from the thousands of speculators crying about their portfolio getting crushed by the bear market that most likely won't recover when the bull market begins. When you diversify in a correlated assets you're doing the direct opposite of what diversifying is suppose to do to your portfolio.

You diversify so when a particular assets class is down, you have other options to bring in cash flow to your account. That means diversifying should involved assets of different classes like investing in Cryptocurrency, Real estate, Bonds, Stocks etc. You shouldn't go around buying worthless shitcoin without any utilities and thinking you're diversifying. You're just gambling and not investing, that should be realized on time so you can take profit if the market is to favor you instead of bonding to a project that most likely without recover if they get hit by a bear market.

I might be late but I hope you consider my opinion if you haven't invested already. Do note that nobody here is qualified to give you financial advice so don't consider anything you see her as one instead use them as a guideline as you do your personal research. The stats are available on the net in regards to how the outcome of bear market has been in the past. Majority of the project you're supposedly diversifying into right now would probably die off or not get back to the level of hyped they had previously before the bear market began which gave them high trading price.

What this means is that you should stay away from them by all means possible although that doesn't mean you should just invest all your capital at ones into the market. We don't know how low the market can go but we're getting closer or might have already reaches therefore the best strategy would be to DCA (Dollar cost average) your investment into Bitcoin.

A good investment is a really decentralized coin.
Many coins are not really decentralized like Binance Coin, Solana Coin or Ripple coin. Plz avoid such coins.
Because decentralisation is very imortant.

Decentralized coins are BTC, ETH or Avalanche.

And also look out for a capped coin. Because inflation really can ruin an investment.

A lot have been said about the nesessity of research firts and about BTC being the most reliable asset to invest. I totally agree with that, but I would also like to add that for profitable investments you also need to take into account the time that is best not only for opening a position, but also for closing it (preferably with a profit). I mean, most newbies, myself included, often get caught thinking that doing research and having a solid asset, like BTC e.g., will make them huge profits in a short period of time. Unfortunately, this is not the case. And until you accept this, you can do rash actions, for example, sell when the exchange rate fluctuates because of the fear of losing your investment, or, on the contrary, buy when the asset is already overbought and take it at a high price.

Therefore, in my opinion, a positive investment experience is possible when you do not throw your last hopes there and do not expect to get everything at once. Investing is a job, and like any job, it requires practice, skill development, and constant training.

Congratulations and welcome to the forum. I would have skipped the post because many have already contributed to it  but I have to add my voice to the discussion and most importantly were I observed is very necessary.

You said you read where it is said that 40% is for bitcoin and 60% for altcoins. The way you presented the statement, it is as if it is a standing rule of investment in this forum. Please I want you to understand that what you said above is nothing but someone's personal view or suggestions. It is not a standard in investment. Again, no matter how accurate any investment advice might appear to you, please do your own research.

Secondly, it has been said many times that investing in bitcoin and spreading your investment to altcoins is not a diversification. When bitcoin the king is down, altcoins go down with it. So, understand this have have peace.

If I were you, I would invest that $1k into bitcoin. ignore the altcoins, unless you yourself are certain that you want to invest in them. just like what welsh has said, "Diversifying doesn't mitigate the risk at all". anyway, you mentioned that you are still a newbie, it would be best for you to actually learn about investing in cryptocurrency than relying on someone on what you should invest on.

If i can advise it's will be better for you to invest on bitcoin only because that's the only cryptocurrency that can be recognized as an investment currency that can be profitable over time without loosing it value, there are many altcoins out there that are shitcoins but to say the fact, majorly base your investment to be 80% on bitcoin, here part if it can be use into trading while other as investment over a long time, then the remaining 20% maybe risked on other cryptocurrencies whereby if failed or down it will jot place a significant loss on you since your investment on them is very little, but as for me i solely base on bitcoin only just to play safe and minimize risk.

I would advice you hold on because the market is not friendly at the moment except your own research is giving you a buy signal then you should stick to Bitcoin for the moment while the other assets choses a direction to follow. The percentage you choose for diversifying your portfolio doesn't matter what matters is how concrete the basis of your research are and how long you intend hodling your altcoins

If I were you, I will take a higher percentage into Bitcoin. I will at least spend 60% or more on Bitcoin. the least will be Ethereum or BNB. Only these two altcoins that I trust more than other altcoins during this bearish market.
Actually, investing needs diversification. but, we must also understand in what assets we are putting our money. With that amount, I will not take many coins. I will only put into Bitcoin only or Bitcoin with 1 altcoin. It is enough. Additionally, never think to invest in shit coins although they offer too legit to be true project, like offering hidden gem promotion or others.

I was wrong before thinking that if I put huge shares in Altcoins I'll be earning more but sadly most of my altcoins dump while Bitcoin is on the surge. I do realize that putting more on Bitcoin is a smart decision and suggesting that instead of allocating 60% to altcoins, you'd better make it to invest in Bitcoin while 40% is for altcoins. Bitcoin is the most reliable asset in crypto, you can't be wrong with that even putting everything into this project as this will survive and potentially considered as a long-term investment.

It's always best to DYOR but I will share my thoughts.  IMHO- 50% Bitcoin, 30% Ethereum, and 20% for everything else.  This will keep you from losing your shirt as well as allowing you to take some controlled risks while swinging for the fences.

I think your investment depends on how long you are willing to hold the coin, if you are holding for a long period of time I would advice in bitcoin, but if otherwise you can just invest based on your initial plan. But investing in altcoin can also be risky tho.
I think it is risky to buy local coins now because BTC has not stabilized yet. But you can buy some amount of bitcoin if you want. In addition, you can buy some BNB. You can buy Etherium if you want. Because when the market goes up will pump these.

Investing is good but their are somethings you need to understand before you go into Investing. You need to understand it is not right for you to invest all that you have just because you want to make money from cryptocurrency, you need a steady source of income that won't be a distraction to your cryptocurrency investment,  cryptocurrency is not a quick money making scheme. Investing in cryptocurrency requires patience,  you need to be prepared for the volatility you will come in contact with in the market, your ability to be patient is what will keep you going in Investing cryptocurrency.

I think Bitcoin will come in at 12 to 13 thousand. Because of the state of the market it will take a long time to recover.
So from now on, buy a little bit, you can do one thing, divide Bitcoin into three parts, buy one part now, buy another part, 18-16k $, buy another part, 10-12k $. And you don't invest with all the money at once.

One thing I can say is that you can invest in Bitcoin if you want.  Now the price of Bitcoin is much lower than the price of Bitcoin. Now is your golden opportunity to invest in Bitcoin.  Many have said that investing in Bitcoin is good for me.  If you want to invest in Bitcoin, you need to understand and know better about investing in Bitcoin.  If you invest in Bitcoin, you will have to spend a lot of time.  On Bitcoin, then you can understand when the price is being pumped and when the price is being dumped, which means you have to keep an eye on it.  It seems to me that you can invest in Bitcoin.

Diversifying your portfolio only gives you an edge over volatility, it doesn't take the risk away
It even makes it more risky. Bitcoin is not as volatile as altcoins, if the market is in bear direction, diversify into altcoins increase the risks.

So the most important thing here is invest an amount you could afford to lose and also try to do your own research "DYOR" ..
Yes if you are talking about altcoins, because many altcoins are nothing but more of gambling. Can you believe that some people prefer to hold bitcoin than fiat? Especially during bull run. If long term and profit is the purpose of your holding, holding bitcoin is the right choice.

Today, again, there is a lot of flashy news on social networks, urging everyone to buy cryptocurrencies, justifying this by the fact that the market is cheap. Therefore, we see people who have no experience in investing but who are ready to take risks and invest their money. This has happened so many times that people, based on the media they read, can be very wrong.

OP, you are almost on the right track. Investing in bitcoin is a very smart move, but you should be aware not only of the pros, expecting a quick return, but also that all your money can be lost. You will be given a lot of advice, but you, and only you, are the masters of your destiny. If you are ready to lose your $1,000, then hurry up and invest. If you value your money, take your time to study any move you are about to make.

If you see in the answers some disagreement with your decision, then this will only benefit you. Only indifferent, and maybe even dishonest, people will rush you to make a decision to invest your money.

Considering this is your first investment, I would suggest DCAing and focus on bitcoin only (with less volatility) than diversifiying for now. I have said before, this bearish phase is vulnerable for "unhealthy" projects to fail to bounce. For a while, thinking about risk is more of a priority than profit.

Regarding the distribution of pie, I guess its your call, you can even allot higher for bitcoin like 60% and the rest for altcoins. But doing that is putting you at risk, since the market now is highly volatile. If ever you want to invest it, make sure you can endure the pain of red portfolio but thats totally fine since you are doing it for long term right? But if you are gonna shift to short term then might study first trading before conducting or putting any money off the table.

It is not mandatory to put 40% into bitcoin and invest the other 60% into altcoins. It depends on money management or the strategy you use. Don't invest all your money, you need to learn to do research. $1000 is pretty big money to get started. you really have to understand how to do analysis, don't just rely on other people's words and luck. Make your first investment well, so there is no trauma about your first investment.

$1000 is a huge amount (at least for me)

Yeah for mee too  Grin

Lot of people says invest in altcoin is risky i would answer yes but invest in crypto currency it self is already risky  Grin Grin DCA for bitcoin is good choice but if you still want to invest in altcoin do your own research and do with your own risk as always

and i will give you quick advice based on my opinion invest in altcoin that are top 100 with criteria

1. dont invest in memecoin or no utility token/coin because they are only for shilling and pump and dump if you can take this risk you can go ahead
2. invest with active community and development
3. they have roadmap and try to achieve it
4. and dont bother to ask community in altcoin disussion they will help

and good luck  Smiley

Hey mate, Welcome to the forum. Hope before investing in crypto you learned some basic things like risk, storing your crypto safely, how crypto works, crypto scams, and so on. These things are very common things that you need to learn. I am not sure who introduced you to cryptocurrency and not sure if he tech you basic knowledge.

Cryptocurrency investment is always high risk, whether you are investing in Bitcoin or Altcoins. Just see the current market, where it was, and where it's now. Invest only that you can afford the loss. We don't when crypto will break previous ATH or if it will never break. You need to know about potential loss. Many people making money from crypto and many are lost. So please learn and research first. Choose only the best and top altcoin when you intend to invest in it.

I am a newbie and would like to invest $1000 to start. I have read that I should put 40 percent into bitcoin and diversify the other 60 percent.
My first question is, if you're limiting your investment options to only cryptocurrencies or by diversifying you mean entering into other industries?

If you're referring to crypto;
True diversification does not really exist as all coins are within the same niche and mirror the price actions of each other; so when the price of Bitcoin goes up, about 90% of coins would go up with it and same thing happens when it goes down. So, you'll have a portfolio which would likely be in red or green at the same time.

If you're considering different markets;
Firstly, you should do your own research. There are lots of investment options, so you would have to read up and understand more about any investment venture and choose how best to diversify your capital.
Bitcoin is a good investment option, there are also other options like real estate, precious metals etc.

Also, worth noting that the majority of replies you get here, are going to be biased. Mine was. I believe in Bitcoin, this is a Bitcoin forum, and you've posted in a Bitcoin dominant section. Luckily probably staying on topic enough to stay here. Although, if you posted about whether altcoins were worth investing in, and secondly safe to do so, you'll find different answers since its from a different audience.

However, put it this way. If I had invested in some of the altcoins which piqued my interest along the way, I would likely looking at losses in them specifically. Whereas Bitcoin I've only ever profited. Although, I might be down to what I received last week, that doesn't matter in the long term.

Ultimately, it's up to you, but try to remember that the majority of altcoins aren't worth your time, and almost always fail. There's a few that might be promising. Particularly those that have Mimble Wimble implemented, as that at least from a technology stand point, is quite interesting. Other than that, most do the same thing, but slightly different.

I've come to realize in investment that your first win always strengthens your confidence level and propels you to invest more. On that note, I think you won't be getting it wrong investing more percentage in Bitcoin than in alts. You should've done a 60% to 80% in Bitcoin and then do the remaining in alts that you would've researched thoroughly. Bitcoin investment is safer than investment in alts. Hey! Come to think of it, Bitcoin is at a good entry level at the moment; whether it goes down further or not. Just invest and close your app and act semi forgetfully about it till end of this year before checking what ROI it has earned you.

In Bitcointalk questions are appreciated and answers will be provided if the questions are worthwhile. But for whatever it is worth, it is best if you do not ask 'noob' questions relating to investment or trading, or to state exact sums of money you possess and wish to invest; that clearly denotes you wholly do not know what you are doing, and when you do not know what you are doing you become more vulnerable to scams and scammers.

Do your personal research about investment or trading and from there you can make up your own mind, if you had done your research you would understand that investing in things that are intrisincally similar is no investment whatsoever.

Just wanna tell you that whoever told you that crypto diversification is a smart thing to do obviously has no clue. First of all, it ain't diversifying at all as all other tokens/coins depend on bitcoin so when bitcoin goes up, they go up to and the same thing happens when it goes down, so what's the point.

Another thing to keep in mind is that you are newbie, and in 99.99% of the time newbies don't know when to sell altcoin on time and problem with alts is that majority of them don't survive the bear market so if you miss you opportunity (and you most probably will), you will end up with bunch of worthless shitcoins.

Stick to bitcoin buddy and if you really want to diversify, invest in something that doesn't have to do with crypto.

As a beginner, of course with the amount of $1000 is big, especially if you start now, of course this will be your first experience of how to invest in the amount determined by you.
40 percent in bitcoin is a good allocation, the rest is diversified in other coins of course all must be done by making an assessment, not just advice, you have to know which one to choose in the 60 percent except bitcoin I believe my investment is a bit safe in compared to other altcoins.

I also previously started investing early but not with large amounts but it was full of experience and failure but from that I could learn a long lesson during initial investment so I know about research and which coins to choose as a good investment and not harm a lot (although the risk remains)

In essence, knowledge must be prioritized so you at least know the real bitcoin.

Maybe here are some threads for you to learn about early investing and other tips.

Where have you read that? Honestly, what's the most recommended for a newbie is don't invest at all if you don't know yet what's the best investment that you must have. And whoever said that you must diversify more with altcoins, might don't have a lot of bitcoins.

But if you're going to listen to the majority here, we'll tell you that you must have a bitcoin portfolio first since you're still a newbie. Learn from it and eventually, you'll get to explore the altcoins because not all of them are profitable.

Can you just imagine of putting $600 there without you knowing where you'll invest there?

Good Luck.
Your advice is correct, I would even say that most of the investments should consist of bitcoin. As for other altcoins, it may not be worth buying them now until you figure out what's what, maybe by then you will change your mind about buying altcoins altogether. Smiley Now is a good time to invest, the market has dipped very significantly and it may take some time before it rises again, in the long run you will get a good profit, the most important thing is patience.

The first thing before investing is know what you invest for, don't rely on someone including those called experts.

I advice you to learn about Bitcoin first if you really want to invest in Bitcoin, it's dumb to invest without any knowledge.

LogitechMouse hit the nail on the head. Do your research. If you haven't done your research, and understand why a particular investment should be successful, you're setting yourself up for failure. You wouldn't go down the street, and invest in a hot dog stand, if you didn't know how busy it was, so why would you do the same with other investments?

I personally didn't really understand the potential of Bitcoin until months, maybe up to a year of using it. I was just using it for a side gig. I basically looked for an alternative to the traditional payment processors like Paypal, simply because I was earning gift cards on a phone at the time, and wanted to sell them. That's basically it, so I was not looking to make millions. Then, as time went on I started to learn a little bit more about it, and that was that. I've now developed a sort of belief system that the world will always need something like Bitcoin. If you care about privacy, and not relying on third parties, you'll need something like Bitcoin. It gives you the freedom. Although, at first I was probably a little bit too young to actually understand the importance of that.

Plus, having a few problems with banks blocking payments, such as a trip I wanted to go on, and then having the hassle of sorting that out; that's basically what drove me to Bitcoin, and ended up becoming a massive part of my life. My investment has already paid off, and not completely via monetary gain, simply the freedom I've achieved over my money has been priceless.

If you want invest in Altcoins. But in the past it was always a gamble since even if the value goes up faster than BTC it also goes down faster again.

If you like, you can diversify, but see altcoins like you are gambling, many of them may not reach all-time-high and they are highly volatile and riskier.

If you want to hold for long period of time like 2 or 3 years, you can invest in bitcoin. If the price sink down further, do not panic to sell. A time is coming you will be happy you invested in bitcoin.

Diversifying doesn't mitigate the risk at all. If you invest that 60% into a poor investment, then you'll lose out. In fact, I'd argue due to having the majority invested in various different things, there's more risk. For example, you invest 60% into ten different altcoins, well most altcoins are absolutely not worth even talking about. The vast majority, and I would go as far as saying 95-99% of altcoins end up failing. So, while you've diversifying into altcoins, you have a very low chance of those altcoins being successful. Plus, it's almost guaranteed you'll lose money if you diversify into that many altcoins, simply because 95-99% fall flat on their face.

Personally, I'd just stick whatever you can afford to lose into Bitcoin. The rest that you aren't sure about, keep in fiat. Bitcoin is definitely the most promising out of any other altcoin out there, and I personally believe the best investment someone can make.

I believe its better than property, the only reason I'd pick property over Bitcoin is if I wanted to move or didn't have a home yet. Since, that satisfies two needs, rather than just being an investment. If I had a home, and was investing solely for profit, Bitcoin all day without any question in my mind.

This might just be the perfect time to invest into Bitcoin, if you plan on holding it long term, or at the very least a year after the next halving.
