It will be sad to say but its not security problem of myetherwallet. It is your own fault. But I don't say its impossible thing to happen. It is hard to take care of numbers. Many times I burnt fees because of this. So stay cold blooded. It happened. Nothing you can do.

I know my chances are practically 0%, but maybe somebody has an idea.

I did a huge mistake and lost 10k $ after I put (copy & paste) my Privatekey (instead of my address) into a spreadsheet... so all my assets had been transferred to https://etherscan.io/address/0xda1efbf72db93ce5dfa47e5ff772dde8f19e2065
and sitting there since... is there anything I can do (beside hitting my head against an stone) ?

Thanks in advance
A first stupid, now desperate guy

10k$ was not a joke amountits a huge amount actually, in my country its equivalent of half million actually. So sad that there is  no chance for you to get it back dude. the only thing you can do is to watch it where is it going to transfer in the eth wallet. But don't commit suicide just because of this mistakes mate, i know its not that easy to accept but try to think positively and be calm down as much as possible.

Thanks a lot for taking time and sending warm words, this is good to see & feels well Smiley

Well, those $10k have exactly been 28 ETH what -by the time of writing- are $20k and yes, no - 4 months later I still think about it from time to time, but I (mentally) I recovered soon after the OP, when I have been travelling around Spain, enjoy the wheater & the people, read about "the flow of money" (what comes will go someday) - so I never felt like I want to hurt myself - well for being that stupid I really wanted to hit my head against a wall - but just a little bit ... Smiley
So this incident is a part of my story now, I did learn a lot and maybe with talking & writing about it I could raise awareness for the one or the other to avoid something similar happens to him or her... Smiley

That said: "Money is just money" and "life is beautiful"!!! Peace!

I almost had that mistake once . That's why we should not save the private key and the address on one notepad or doc . I hope you get your tokens back .Even you have less chance . Lesson learned ,Move on and Create new wallet. I hope it will not happen to you again .

I have also lost money doing stupid things. All I can really say is that you must always double check, heck check 5x that you have the right info before you send any info to any form or anywhere online. You should not allow yourself access to the privatekey that way you cannot make mistakes like this again. Sorry about what happened but don't give up you can make the money back and more.

Well, finally I found Mr.X, at least the one how has taken 2 OMG off my MEW for sure...

So what to do with him? My first intention is: write him a PM and ask for his fairness...

what would you guys do?
Who is he?
As you mentioned PM he obviously has account here, so best thing would be to share his profile with rest of us.
Maybe just maybe he will return money to you.

do not have the best solution to restore all your assets.. mistakes are so often I see it sorry for the fate that befall you.. often meticulous in making decisions do not be reckless and do not despair.. missing is just forget assume you give alms to people who cannot afford..

I always hate reading these stories:( The lessons learned are brutal in crypto. A month after I started researching and trading cryptocurrencies I ordered a Ledger Nano S. That is a hardware wallet and it was cheaper than I thought it would have been.

With the Nano S. you can connect to MEW and use that interface. The fancy thing is that you must physically press a button on the Nano S. to approve any transaction. That way someone cannot steal your coins unless he:
1) Steal your Nano S. and guess the pin code (up to 8 digits) in max three tries at which point it gets locked
2) Get a hold of your recovery phrases which you should have written down on a piece of paper (24 words).

I have ordered 2 more Nano S. and am going to clone the one I have and place them at my family in case there is a fire or something else in my apartment. Only thing that keeps me nervous is the 24-word recovery phrases I have on a paper. Where to store that safely.. hmm.

I will suggest you to write to him and ask for the OMG. Perhaps, you can ask a mod for help if he refused to cooperate. Why do you think he took 2 OMG coin only? How about the rest of the coins?

Yes, in fact it is a pity that you made such a mistake. And it's a pity that there are those who immediately took advantage of this chance and dared to sin. No matter how stupid it may sound, but still I advise you not to be upset, because if a person does that, then he will not return anything. But you can try to write in support. They know better how to be in this situation.

First of all sorry for what happens with you, secondly if you have found the person then you can try to contact him personally. Ask him politely to send your money back, although I doubt he will send it back to you. At least you should try it first, maybe ask some percents of it only. Lets say 50;50 or any amount you wish. Nothing else you can do except trying to ask him.

There's no way that guy will ever return his money. He would just ignore him so just move on and I think op has a habit of being careless because $10k is not a small amount and I would be making 10x or more checking before I complete that transaction.

What a disaster.....
Its really a sad and devastating if that kind of misfortune happens to ones person, It is just because all your efforts earning such amount will be good for nothing.
In this situation you can't do anything about it, you cant retrieve any of your tokens that are been taken from you it is because its your own fault and MyEtherWallet will not do anything to retrieve or even recover any of this coins/tokens because its against their rules and policies..
The only one that i think you can do on your case is that contact the owner of the wallet who received all your earnings and beg for his/her kindness to return what he/ she stole from you... Or just be it, start for a new one and learn from your own mistakes to avoid such missfortune.

Its sad to say that you can't do anything about it even if you contact the help and support of myetherwallet, because one of the rules and policies stated in my myetherwallet that "Myetherwallet.com does not hold your pivate keys for you. We cannot access accounts, recover keys, reset passwords, nor reverse transactions. protect your keys and always check that you are in correct URL. You are responsible for your security."
But its not the end for you don't take it as negative. Start a new one, lets learn from our own mistakes to ensure to achieve what are goals
Hope that this incident/ misfortune would be the last.

Oh! that's a big mistake. There is no chance to get back your money. Anyone are able to view the spreadsheet and once they notice that there is a private key on the record they are like a racer who race for the first position to access your account and get anything that has a value on your wallet. So, move on even it's hurt. There is always good return to those who act ethical and moral. You will be blessed more than what you lost.

Actually all they need is to get your IP address and from there it would be a matter of a few clicks for them to know everything about you Cheesy
Even though this is not about the MEW, Next time please try to use it offline when you are about to create a wallet, the whole site is a wallet generator in your own browser.

Hi friends,

finally we have some movement on the wallet where my funds were sent to and finally ended up here:
https://etherscan.io/address/0x41d57e163b6c64fca2cd6535fcaa199b1fedd98b
where "he/them" already accumulated a total of 1.945 ETH (around 650k $) !

Does anybody has any idea what I can to ongoing with this new information?

Kind regards
Stefan

You can report that ETH address here: https://etherscamdb.info/report/ so it can be tagged as part of the phishing address that every user of Etherscan and MEW should watch out for. Now if ever you want to file a legal complaint against the person who stole your coins and do a thorough investigation on him, you can go to the website of the Internet Crime Complaint Center or IC3 here: https://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx Since you do not have much information about the hacker, just write what you think is relevant and can help you track him down.

Anyways, good luck and I hope you get your money back.

Hmm, I mean I have not to much to lose, but somehow I don´t want to give that many personal informations to the FBI (not that they don´t have them already...)  Cool

Once it has been sent it can never be return, that's the saddest things that we need to move on and learn from our mistakes anyway mate.  Though you can see where it sent to the wallet but like what I said it can never be back to your wallet again.

Thanks for your warm words, mate.
Meanwhile - with some distance I accepted that this mistake was the most expensive in my life, but is was my mistake and I "just" loss money.
A lot, but JUST MONEY... Also I believe a little in Karma, so probably it is OK that this happened to me now... Smiley

You cant do anything but regret on the thing you have done. Those ETH are lost and checking on the history those amounts been transfered on an address next was transfered again to a wallet which do have many transactions.I suspect its an exchange or either a mixing service.Tracking them whose the one who hacked is impossible.

First of all, this has nothing to do with MyEtherWallet, so the title is somewhat misleading. MEW doesn't have accounts and doesn't store your coins. It is just a way to transfer your coins. The thief just spotted your private keys somewhere on Google spreadsheet and used it to drain your wallet.

Anyway, I don't think we can get your coins back, but I just wanted to say "FUCK YOU!" to the person whoever stole your coins, so I sent him a FUCK.  Grin

Haha, nice...and absolutely true: this has nothing to do with the security of MEW, just my exposure...
It seems like he already cashed out the 27 ETH from BTC-e ... :/

I'm sorry for your lost but no you cannot do anything about it you can only see the transaction transferring it to another wallet unless the one who transfer it  Give it bac k to you.

After some further research the address it was sent to seems to be the BTC-e - wallet where "the thief" meanwhile probably could have cashed out and do some unnecessary posh holiday on my bill... :/

I am sorry for your lost. Sometimes our fingers are working faster than our brain. Sad
I am quite confused about this. As far as I know, the number of characters for private key and ETH wallet address are not the same. So in my understanding, you can't input the private key as the ETH wallet address, because it will be an invalid address. So under normal scenario, the transaction will be declared invalid and the coins returned to the sender address.
He was applying to signature campaign and copy/paste private key instead eth address to application form. Someone seen private key and took his balance. He wasn't sending his ether to anyone.

Do you remember which spreadsheet you posted your private key? If that's a campaign, and you know what that campaign is, then there is a chance that you can track who withdraw your balance in your Ethereum wallet. Simply check the TX ID on Etherscan and copy the wallet address of the person who receives your balance. Now try to check if that wallet address has a similar address in the spreadsheet or if it has a similar address to any of the participants of the campaign. If you find out who that person is, and he is one of the participants, then make a post in the Meta section and tag him/her. Let everyone know that s/he stole your money. Remember, since that's a campaign spreadsheet, only you and those who are also in the campaign will notice your private key, including your campaign manager. In other words, there is a high possibility that only one of them could have done it to you. But of course, do not defame that person or anyone in the campaign unless you have all the evidence you need to back it.

Good idea & thanks for your effort... unfortunatelly neither the spreadsheet nor Google knows anything about the owner.
As trading my assets onto it where the first transactions on this wallet it seems, this was a fresh one...

Meanwhile I wrote 2 messages to Mr. X, just in case somebody is interested...:

Nr. 1

First of all: sorry COSS-Devs. for abusing this thread for a not-content- but personal-related issue:

"My desperatety and hope in the same hand - a honest word from a man to a man."

Dearest finder of my MyEtherWallet-Private Key,

I know you are within the community with regulary checking the updates in COSS-Bounty-Spreadsheet and if you read this, you know that these words are adressed just to you.

My name is Stefan, I am 34 years old, living in Germany and having a relationship since nearly 8 years (even though I am not the smartest neither the prettiest guy under the sun and my DNA did not give me the best out of the pot, but that´s how it is).

I havn´t been a good person all my life, I have to admit, I have good sides and some not so good, just like everybody, I think, that´s part of you and me as of everybody else in our time being on this wonderful planet.

I  worked hard and good, as my boss attested, but since few years I am on the way to find out, what I really want in life and I think "helping others with their problems" and "make others feeling good or at least better describes it best." (to be honest I wasnt meaning giving such a huge gift to somebody... Wink )

For having time doing so, I recently decided to quit my job to focus on myself and other human beings more than on carreer. This in my country basically means "trowing your pension in the toilet", but no regret, I enjoy the life, making jokes, smile as much as possible, try to make myself and the people arround me happy. Understood that with smaller things I can make some small impact for good, so actually in Spain picking rubbish from the beaches, nothing to get to much honor for, but still it feels like a good thing.

I am afraid of the dentist (to be honest I panic and gramp whenever I have to go...) but more afraid of the skin-doctor, as my skin looks like vanille-pie with small, but dark chocolate flakes on it.
If it turns out I have skin-cancer (what I consider a 40:60 chance) I will be fucked as I can´t - without the funds you found – afford paying any threat, fair enough, this is my problem only.

And last but not least – I am a human being, making mistakes and this time I did it big time by copy&paste my private key instead of my public address to the Coss-bounty-spread and wasn´t aware enough of what might happen to my account in this new world – I learned my lesson or at least started to last night.

But enough said of myself now, I dont want to make you fell asleep – anyway thanks for reading so far – let´s talk about you.

We both, you and me decided to enter this anonymous world activly, so I don´t know you and I probably never will, but what I know is that behind each and every public address & private key there is a real person, not numbers and letters, but a human being with feelings and emotions, with problems and joy - just as you, just as me, just as behind every 0x....... - number there is somebody with his or her own story.

Now you know mine, I don´t have bad feeling towards you as it wouldnt change things if I would do and I don´t want to annoy you with talks about carma. You were the lucky one how fund my exposed key and just did what most of us what have done immediately, me included. Now you hold the key, you are the one who can decide what will happen with my savings.

Probably you will find a way to liquidate the assets and spend it for some things, that would be your good right, mate. I am not entirely sure if you could enjoy all these gifted things, but probably you could, I don´t know, you can estimate it.

But for me there is a little light in the end of this entirely dark tunnel, now that some days past by and more to come, you maybe already found or will find yourself thinking about this twice.

I believe in the good in the everybody´s heart, I always did, I actually do and most probably will always do so till the end of my days.

Even if this would be an incredible huge move for yourself and I consider it is not very certain, here is my newly generated account: 0xfF75a727e4113F40f007489BADF5941931Ed6372 just in case you won´t find anything good enough to spend my money for and instead you decide to roll back the time, you would be make an even bigger impact to my life.

Thanks in advance
Stefan

Nr. 2:

Dearest finder of my MEW-Private-Key...

now a few days passed by since I told you my story, still I won´t give up hope and continue to believe in the good in everybody.

--- Who missed it: don´t bother , just make sure you never publish your private key anywhere in the Internet! Wink if you are interested in short: While attending the bounty-promotion I put the private key (instead of my Public Address) of MyEtherWallet in the form and not far later my Wallet was emptied – of course
--- Let me point out that this was 100% my mistake as a human being doing to many things in the same time that lost few % of concentration and zooom, happened – no way back... most probably.

Back to you, dearest finder. Since 10 days nothing happened, so probably you are (not yet?) decided to do the big-heart-step sending it "back" to my new wallet, I understand & expect that.

The last days I thought a lot about it & want to make an other offer... to you, to me, to the nature:
For every 0,5 ETH you release back to my new wallet I will clean one beach/area from waste (glas, plastic etc.) whereever in the world I will be by the moment the next 0,5 ETH step is reached.
As "proof of work" I will post a picture (place/website to be announced later) of myself with the result (filled rubbish-bag) to make sure, I do my part of the job.

In case you decide that this is the way the -step by step- release my funds, please let me know, that you accepted the "make the world a better place challenge" by sending the smallest possible (or the first 0,25 ETH) amount to my new wallet 0xfF75a727e4113F40f007489BADF5941931Ed6372

Love & peace
Stefan

P.S. Thanks @ COSS-team & BCT-adimn(s) to let me publish this here even though it has nothing to do with you.

Thanks for your condolecence, guys, this already helped a little to find the way back to the top of the hill, will be hard & steep, but I will try it... Cheers, Stefan

I really feel sorry for your loss, but I think there is no chance of getting your money back. Or you could at least try to contact their support if they could help you out but that's not a 100% sure you could retrieve them all back. This is one lesson learned, I almost had the same mistake when I copy pasted my private keys too but good thing I double check mines and almost lost them too. I hope you get your money back though, that's such a huge amount.

Hey mate, sorry to hear about this unfortunate event that happened to you. I believe (and think that you accepted it already) that you'll not be able to recover your coins. Hopefully, this mistake will teach you an important lesson regarding cryptospace. Actually, you're mistake also made an impression to me and made me realize that I should also be very careful in what I copy/paste especially to this forum.

The safest way I've ever seen things done uses three different computers, one for highly secure wallet software, another for mining and a third for there regular business.

It is actually surprising how small the group of developers out there are that can properly handle Coding cryptocurrency. In the end, in order for people to deal with cryptocurrency they have to download install software that their system warned against, using a system of mining and confirmation that they don't fully understand, and within that fragile environment they place a financial holding.

This is the problem. This is the environment that cryptocurrency people find themselves. Number one, you download software such as software wallets, mining software, and other things that we use as tools, and half of these things most people don't fully understand and they have to force through their firewall and security measures. Most cryptocurrency people have a minimum of 10 pieces and software on their system that they are security software did not like and they had to force it through anyway. Number two,, since there are no regulations websites and services come & Go leaving no effective Trail of who works for those companies.

You all are entirely true, 0% after 100% stupid mistake, and sure: I´ll do everything to be more careful.

In future I will always JUST log in with my json-file + password, what I should have done earlier, but tried once, didnt work, stopped thinking about it and now feel the pain in the ass...

Anyway, we all stay aware, concentrated & positive...

Kind regards

That bastard guy should be get punishment to steal your money. Sorry mate, i don't have any idea how to recover/get your money back from him. 27 ETH is a lot, for me as well.
Now all you can do is create a new MEW, make sure never ever posted your private key again.

Sad to hear out but I would say 0% chance is very real on these kind of scenarios which those coins are lost forever unless if the owner of the address would return those coins. Since it have been stolen then 100% it wont come back for sure and its really a stupid mistake of yours why you did paste publicly on your private key and wasted up that huge amounts. 10k usd is too much and I'm sure that thief is laughing as of now.

Thanks for all your warm words, mates. I followed the advice of some and wrote an open letter to the one who explored the mistake, now just hoping for the best, I believe the good side in everybody´s heart is strong enough for a move like this, greed might exceed it, though.

Sorry to hear about your loss, but your assets are very likely gone now.

For future transfers, you might consider a hardware wallet.  Ledger Nano S or Trezor are two recommended brands.  Both are pretty good at protecting your private key.

Never use on-line wallet that you don't totally control.

People using this 'exodus' or 'jaxx' are also playing with fire.

Ohh my word, I am really sorry for your loss. Unfortunately I doubt anything can be done. Were you applying for a bounty campaign? If yes, in future, have a separate account for such things and keep large amounts of your investment in a separate out of reach account.

Unfortunately for you it is gone, its a very costly mistake. You are right about having next to no chance of recovering the coins. The only thing left is to learn from it and ensure it never happens again.

Did the campaign manager ever notified you that you input a private key instead of ETH wallet? since private key is much longer.

No, unfortunatelly not, just tonight, when I informed him, but that was about 4 days too late...

There is no chance to recover that since you do not know who steal your tokens, just let it go and continue your journey.
