Because MEW does't save your private key.
and once you forgot it you cant get it back.
just store safely your private key so you can be secure that
no one will hack you. bookmark it.
so you can avoid phishing site!

No need to protect MEW, you only need an external wallet, that's all.

more informations please how do you do know fisher?
Pishers are site that are created by pishers(someone who developed such site or we may call hackers). This sites are mimicry of MEW it means that its a fake replica, a fake copy and a fake duplicate of Myetherwallet. These site are used to scam people, to hacked someone and to get your private keys.
You can easily determine a site that are pishing site by simple checking the url of such site because they may appear like these
mytherwallet.com
myethrewallet.com
myętherwallet.com
myėtherwallet.com
As you can see at these sites they may appear the same as the original but if you take a closer look its different. So becarefull and be informed by these sites they already been a thousand victims of it.
Also beware of some notification email that notify you that your account has been open on different IP and they are giving you a site of a pishing site where most users have been fooled so beware of it.
Its Phisher or Phishing - is the attempt to obtain sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details (and money), often for malicious reasons, by disguising as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phishing

But I like the sites that you provided above, which mimics the original, that's why I bookmark ( https://www.myetherwallet.com/ ) so that I don't need to enter and give those hackers or phisher a chance to stole my ETH or Tokens on my wallet. MEW already provided enough notifications to each user not to get phished. So everyone has to really protect and check everything before opening and putting our private keys.

And its really sad to read someone becoming a victims because we can't do anything once they have stole from you. And we can't really emphasized more that its our responsibility to safeguard and protect our coins not just in MEW but on other cryptocurrency wallet. Due diligence is needed.

There is a new message on the top of myetherwallet,

"Hey! Listen! 🎣 Phishers are stealing coins from folks like YOU! Protect yourself!
Install EAL or use MetaMask. These will help protect you."

Has Anyone here installed EAL or MetaMask?  Does it work well? Are there any reasons not to install these?  Is there something better to install?

Thank you
I think its not that required to install EAL or Metamask to keep your account more secure.
All you need to do to keep your security tight is that handle you private key carefully, double check the site before logging in your private key or better bookmark the right for less risk of being scammed, Don't  give your private key to anyone and Have as safe and secure browsing.

The messages that appear at the top are purely from the default myetherwallet app

Aims to keep the account owner careful to keep all types of coins, as very many hackers

Do not give your key wallet to others and keep it safe, only you know it
