So before you enter the private key from your wallet, it can fall into the hands of scammers? How then do I go into my wallet and make a transaction?

Popular Ethereum wallet interface MyEtherWallet has succumbed to a DNS hijacking attack that allowed a hacker to redirect users to a malicious version of the website.

The MEW confirmed that this was not their fault and was trying their best to identify the attacked server to fix things as soon as possible.
This topic is rapidly spreading on the Reddit forum. The attacking IP address seems to come from Russia. At the time of writing, 25,000 ETH ($ 17 million) has been stolen.

It is highly recommend that everyone be careful when using the MEW wallet and follow the security instructions by MEW wallet. In other words, you are advised to integrate Metamask into login and make direct transactions via Metamask. If you want to check your balance, visit https://etherscan.io/, which means you do not have to log into MyEtherwallet.com anymore, so you will avoid the hidden potential risk here.

I haven't heard the news yet, but I really felt sorry for those people who lost their money/coins due to hacking. I hope those victims will serve the justice they deserve, it's really hard to earn money especially if you're in 3rd world country like me. That's why I am always checking the site that I am visiting which is possible for the attacks/malicious software that can steal our data especially our bank account details. We should be aware of our actions too don't download suspicious files or whatever 3rd party application that can lead to penetration of our private files. Anyway, thank you for informing use brother.

I am terrible at Fantasy Football!!!

After today's loss, I stopped trusting MyEtherWallet. If it is hacked, and I did not go to any fake sites, I decided all the shadows, not even very valuable, to bring to the stock exchanges. For today, wallets will be used only for transfer from one exchange to another.
If you no longer trust in myetherwallet, and I cannot really blame anyone that doesn't right now, then use another wallet it is that simple, there are many other wallets out there that you can use in order to generate your ethereum addresses, while I have never had any kind of problem with myetherwallet I'm seriously thinking about replacing it.

If dns server is the weak link why not log-in into myetherwallet via IP?
Why is myetherwallet not publishing their ips for safe use?
Currently I am showing 54.192.122.81
Crap I guess I cannot login via IP.. sigh!

Unfortunately, this situation shows once again how people are reckless. I'm sure that hose who had access to the MEW with the Trezor or Ledger Nano S hardware wallet did not suffer from this attack.

You know what ? OP is writing random thing and smugle his website link there. There no 17million stolen https://etherscan.io/address/0x1d50588c0aa11959a5c28831ce3dc5f1d3120d29 here the hacker wallet. I hope you guys still be aware too.
Been searching up which wallet on where OP is tending to say here.$17 million stolen is indeed high amount but i dont think the address you given in on the ones who do make that redirection or DNS hack of mew. 215 Ether is just too small out of that DNS attack but yet its quite big money basing on current Eth price which is $641 that would be still roughly on $137k.
Hacking incidents do really happen and most of the time they do appear when theres a bullish trend or market is on greens. Wink
$17 millions just like an illusion. I'm seeing so many people are talking only one wallet that has used by scammer to scamming through the phishing site. I don't even see any other wallet address related to this scam. DNS hijacked was a classic hacked case. That's happened on so many platforms.

DNs were compromised, not their fault, it is faulty DNS,which is why i luckily i didnt get hacked,it isnt goin to be issue as those hackers are didnt get all of the funds in mew wallets,it should have some cold storage. As far as i know it is already fixed few hours ago which is why those people who logged in their mew to the are the only ones who got hacked.

Now everyone must be wary of cryptos stored at the MEW because the security of this website is not good at all. And they will not be responsible if the site is being hacked cryptos. Therefore, there is a backup plan that is hardware wallet. You can buy Ledger Nano S or Trezor to store cryptos as these are the 2 safest wallets available at the moment. Use hardware wallets to avoid being hacked by the hacker

wow, $17 mil. is a large number if it's true. People should be more careful. It's easy to get lazy and let your guard down.

I don't blame OP for putting their website, but when I see two guys in suits on some website, offering me something, right away I can see a big sign fraud lol.

You are quoting my post without significant connection towards on what you reply. You are not getting my point and my question towards op on what address and sources where op claims about that $17M hacked tokens amounts.
Due to the lack of security of the MEW website. I find it very disturbing at times. I pity all the people that were affected by the hack. They should implement a simple verification security feature to avoid such attack. Today all the people are selling and we can see a bloodbath in CMC. Due to these hacks, the prices kept going down.
This is DNS hacked which involves on the domain itself and MEW has nothing to do with redirection.

That is a crazy thing to happen. Stole DNS, wow, it is very high tech skill one who can attack such technique. How about using JSON file It is still secure or not. when people log with pv key it is vulnareble to attack. As long as I use JSOn file , the asset is secure.

Yea I have noticed yesterday that the website of MEW is not accesable there was something on the page that it was being attack by some kind of crap I thought I was having problem with my Internet or Browser and now that I have read this it is clear now Thanks!

I never check my MEW regularly and as what the OP states, I used etherscan.io first to check my balance and see something wrong with my wallet before logging it. One thing I noticed though is that I have received some weird tokens so
I reported it to be a scam coin.

And now I was surprised to see the news that MEW was exploited again. And this is not the first time that this incident happened so I hope that everyone did learn from the past mistakes and bookmark MEW or used Metatask and be careful on the links that you clicked while browsing the web.

MEtamask is indeed going to protect our private keys,i am only using a hardwallet and metamask extension to protect those bitcoins which i possessed. It will be enough to secure our coins because of the built in private keys in our hardwallets, these hacker wont have any chance of stealing our coins as it needs to put those codes in your wallet manual.

It is really unfortunate for anyone using it, the problem with etehreum users is that they don't have option to keep their funds in a hardware or paper wallet such is the case with bitcoin, and this is why most people avoid online wallets because they are vulnerable to attacks and hacks, that is why all the hacking that has been going on the cryptocurrency is all concerning altcoins, because their network does not have the same level of security as the bitcoin does.

I think it has become a serious problem that most often occurs in myetherwallet, there is a gap that can always be broken by the dumper website or the hacker, the question arises whether, myetherwallet hacked by hackers outsiders or indeed internal hackers in the company.

17Million dollars?  How could people have fallen for this?  When my devices are connected to my financial dealings I can access any site with them but the one i use for crypto or internet banking holds extra security. I don't access just any site.

I feel sorry for those victims.
In this case I do not think it is wise to blame the victims, they did not fall prey of an email and they clicked on a link and then they lost their money, what happened was that they tried to access the right site and then they were redirected by a malicious server, so I think that people need to seriously consider stop using my ether wallet and find another way to access their coins.

this is always going to be the problem with web wallets which is why they are always considered the least secure of all types of wallets. but unfortunately for ethereum there aren't any good options like there are for bitcoin. for instance we have Electrum for bitcoin which is a light wallet which is fast, secure and easy to use. but for ethereum there aren't any easy to use wallets that are fast and secure and don't take up all your hard disk space and bandwidth.

Actually, MEW is not a web wallet, but rather a client-side interface for accessing blockchain. Smiley You can also run MEW offline on a computer that has no internet connection. You dowload their entire website interface from GitHub and you can generate wallets offline. You can also send transactions offline by signing them on offline computer and transfering that signature (streak of characters) from that computer to an online computer via lets say usb. You then send that signed transaction through MEW. Nobody can steal your assets, because private key doesn't leave the offline computer (it is similar than with hardware wallets which are safer by the way).

For security, it is very important to download a browser that supports the black list of malicious websites, EtherAddressLookup and MetaMask are the two most popular options for Chrome users. Provide an additional level of protection, MyEtherWallet users can also download a copy of the website from Github and run the purse on a standalone computer, which will further enhance security.

It's hard to that because it's out of our control but we can have control and take responsibility for our coins so better to use now a hardware wallet like nano ledger or trezor. We don't know when the website wallets or trading site can get compromise so think ahead and don't let our future stole.

If there is an opportunity to steal such a sum, then this is very bad news for ETH's reputation. Such security issues have a poor impact on the value of cryptocurrencies. And now ETH and other coins and lost a lot of value, which indicates the panic among holders of the crypto. But I hope soon to correct the situation.

This has happend many times with MyEtherwallet. In my opinion they should implement some security measures on its website like some other exchanges google authenticator. I never heard other exchanges has been hacked everytime I heard about MEW. Admin should seriously think about making it more secure so that nobody will fear to login. I am always afraid to login my MEW Ac because I have seen many people lost their coins without sharing their keys. I usually avoid to login my Ac I always use etherscan or ethplorer to check my coins. Only thing we can do is always login carefully check the website address twice before using your keys. I would say use UTC file to login your Ac that is more secure. Try to secure your coins in Trezor wallet that is the best way to secure your coins.

The hardware wallet is recommended than the online wallet

So sad when i here that popular web wallet like Myetherwallet can get hacked, seriously i can't trust any we wallet, i think they didn't use cloudflare dns, this is due to uses of public dns.

After what happened, people can stop trusting web wallets. Even if you follow the safety rules, you can lose money. As you can see, hardware wallets are safest for now. By the way, it's interesting how they solve the problem with dns attacks now.

one thing I want to ask, when will myetherwallet return to normal? or even never will?

Seems that myetherwallet is safe now. But we should wait until myetherwallet developers officially make an announcement. Before that log in to the wallet is very risky.

Wow, it's already 17mln$, I read about it but it was absolutely another amount, if I don't mistake only about 150.000$.
I heard the same thing that around 212 ETH was stolen or something, but this is insane. 17 freaking million dollars is a humongous amount and I seriously feel bad for the people who lost their funds. I usually tend to check my funds through ethplorer and rarely ever access my wallet which helped me out in this case. I advise everyone not to access their wallet if they simply wish to check their funds and instead depend on websites like ethplorer etc which will minimize the risk to a big degree. Also, I still consider MEW relatively safe even after this attack since this is the most reliable ETH wallet at the moment.

In other words, you are advised to integrate Metamask into login and make direct transactions via Metamask. If you want to check your balance, visit https://etherscan.io/, which means you do not have to log into MyEtherwallet.com anymore, so you will avoid the hidden potential risk here.

Hackers are everywhere these days. And many of them are going into the world of cryptocurrency, knowing that there is so much money in there. This is not a good incident. This might cause potential cryptocurrency investors to once again question the safety measures used by cryptocurrency wallets, especially online ones.

It's really a bad day for those owners of this alleged hacked, its been noticed even before that MEW got this problem and to makes sure that you
have some extra security better not to open a website manually, they advise to bookmarked the site and make sure that private keys and those extra
securities already been set up, those hackers are just around waiting for the next target.

So sad to hear, and at least they could trace the hacker if possible but I think they need the help of the government to do so.

But nice for them to have initiative to do some action like checking your coin with our logging to your MEW that really cause phising when you open the wrong site.

I saw also the tweet of Mew about this problem and i feel sorry for those victims who got scammed. And i am also afraid about this because some of my token got a big price in the market. I did not open my MEW because I'm so scared that my token will got stolen. We all know that we are not all secured, so don't make a move or access some unknown website. And thanks for this topic because i got an idea about the news of MEW.

They always warned that Keystore and seed phrase was not a secure way to access the wallets so I don't think this is a big surprise. If you accessed with a TREZOR or Ledger you should be okay.

Yes it is not the MEW side fault. but maybe in the future, can they have a 2fa authentication for login into MEW ?
i think it is necessary to develop some security system on the web wallet such as MEW.

Hardware wallets our salvation in such situations, well, or at least Metamask, but certainly not a private key to access the wallet through MEW.

Beware if the myetherwallet website is don't have https and don't use private key when accessing your myetherwallet. For now don't transact yet while ethereum developers fixing myetherwallet to prevent loosing ethereum and tokens. We can use an alternative coin for now like bitcoin, neo, and other altcoins for all of our transactions while ethereum is recovering.

This is really unfortunate. I believe MEW have been notified of this issue before by BLUE team way back in January. I think MEW could have prevented this if they welcomed the warning and took the necessary action.

The problem is if people rush a lot, like we did a few days ago, it is very easy to lose a ton. Many people were redirected to a phishing site so that is the way they lost money and access to their tokens and ETH. Always you need to check that there is a green bar at the top, never ever put in your private keys without seeing the proper URL. We need to slow down and be very careful because in this Industry there are so many thieves waiting for us to make just one mistake and we lose everything. We all need to take cyber security in general more seriously, especially when we are dealing with money issues.
This is no only the first time the scammers are using DNS hijacking method to replace the real site with a fake one. I remember there are some icos are getting the same problem like parity. Remember this already happened with MEW for a few times. I guess use google DNS is not safe anymore and i'm not using it and nothing happen to me.

When you see the actual number like 17 million it's a wake-up call.

I had over $600 of cryptos stolen last year from a wallet. I wonder if that 17 million number only includes ETH and doesn't count the value of all tokens stolen?

yes ,,, I also heard the news ... maybe we should be careful and also give extra security to our wallet if we use myetherwallet ...and also do not leave a lot of balance in our wallet ... so we can avoid hacker attacks...

Has the very unfortunate news been hacked again? I have also used it recently, hoping that there will be no loss, although I have very little money. However, this issue requires the official to strengthen security, otherwise many people are afraid to use it again.

Such an attack made us all sad. 25,000 ETH is very serious. The required courses must be taken and the same problems shouldn't happen again.

I expected this problem but it seems to be very big with that $17M perhaps it happened for long a period of time before they noticed. And the people will gradually pullout their money

17Million dollars?  How could people have fallen for this?  When my devices are connected to my financial dealings I can access any site with them but the one i use for crypto or internet banking holds extra security. I don't access just any site.

I feel sorry for those victims.

When I saw we this I felt bad for the victims. Many will blame MEW for security issue but they fail to realize that security of a software can only stand strong when the user employ good internet surfing habits.

Quite unfortunate though.

I have been a target of a cyber attack some years ago. Within 5 hours I got h it t over 23 times. But I didn't fall because I employ good surfing habits /ethics

this is always going to be the problem with web wallets which is why they are always considered the least secure of all types of wallets. but unfortunately for ethereum there aren't any good options like there are for bitcoin. for instance we have Electrum for bitcoin which is a light wallet which is fast, secure and easy to use. but for ethereum there aren't any easy to use wallets that are fast and secure and don't take up all your hard disk space and bandwidth.
