I might have connected it to my laptop a while back before opening ledger live, but I don't remember what happened.
Nothing bad will happen. You can open Ledger Live before connecting and unlocking your Nano S, or you can connect your hardware device before firing up Ledger Live/Electrum. After you enter your PIN, you should hear that familiar USB sound which signals that connection has been established. The PIN activates your device and boots it up from its sleep mode (let's call it that). The order in which you perform those steps don't matter.

Whenever the device is powered up, it will ask for a PIN.

It doesn't matter what it is connected to... it could be a USB port on pc, laptop or mobile device... it could be a USB wall charger... or even a USB power bank... as long as it is getting 5V (USB standard) it will power up.

Once it has booted it will ask for a PIN. It only "counts" PIN attempts when you click both buttons when the ✓ symbol is shown on the screen to "enter" the guess. If you disconnect and power down the device before clicking both buttons, then it isn't counted.

When you connect your nano ledger to your laptop when already signed in ledger live, it asks you for your pin on the device.  I know with three wrong attempts, it resets.  But when you connect your ledger to your laptop, then just unplug it, that does not use an attempt right?  So even say if you aren't finished typing your pin and unplug it... that doesn't use an attempt right?  I am pretty positive it doesn't but just want to make sure.  Asking this because everytime i plug my nano ledger into laptop, i always pretty much type my pin in before unplugging it.

What happens when you connect your nano ledger to your laptop when you do not have ledger live opened?  Does it still ask you for your pin?  If so, and you enter it correctly, what can you even do if you don't have ledger live opened?  Assume you aren't using it with electrum.  Reason i ask this is because i only connect my nano ledger to my laptop only if im logged into ledger live.  I might have connected it to my laptop a while back before opening ledger live, but I don't remember what happened.
