Since you're using a single GPU to "try" mining, I bet that the system you're using was Windows, right?
If that's the case, you can use the miners available here in the forum (https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/claymores-cryptonote-windows-cpu-miner-v40-647251 or https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/wolfs-xmrbcndsh-cpuminer-2x-speed-compared-to-lucasjones-new-06202014-632724 or use search - "miner")
You only need to point them to the right pool that mines the coin you want to mine. like halker2010 said.
Except, his example was for Bitcoin, and i don't recommend mining Bitcoin with a single GTX980ti.
Choose an altcoin with a nice value and a low total hasrate, excluding cryptonote coins.
If you need more information, the best action is still using the "search" function.

A one gpu miner that can't get it to work? What is the world coming to? Do what he said and if it doesn't work, provide more details. The only other option is killing yourself, but I wouldn't suggest that, if you value your life outside of mining.

well you can mine most algos with ccminer try mining bitcore from a pool with this command 1: Setting up a miner for nvidia 980 GTx Ti.(Just nvidia)
2: Registering with a new alt coin with good mining software..
