Do not mine using the r9 290, else you have very limited knowledge.

R9290 or better yet for most efficient (energy wise) is the 7950.

Mining Hardware Guide

https://litecoin.info/Mining_Hardware_Comparison

I just noticed the few 7950's left are soaring in price at newegg.com  wow! My 7950's are like gold!!!

Beware of any "reference cards" (those with a single fan). Even the 9290 beast
of course comes in that sorry flavor, it wont do for 24/7 mining either.
At least not if history is any guide! Do your homework!

I can only imagine there has been a run on GPU's lately. So bare that in mind.

Best Brands:

Asus - #1, no question for their 7950's with the strong twin fans, triple wide frames, heavy builds, solid, quiet. But their gone, only stocked twice this year at newegg, they go fast. E-bay maybe...or amazon?

MSI & Gigabytes - I hear their great, but some spotty reliability issues, very acceptable 7950's, but a few. But there will be duds.

Sapphire - never again, lol. But some batches are better than others for 7950's if what I read is believed?

Practically all the other brands are not up to par, but these days one either waits, patiently, constantly monitoring stocks, or bites the bullet and gambles on lousy builds.

Whatever you do stay away from the single fan reference cards (one one fan on them = reference = very hot running).

I just checked newegg.com, only sapphires left, and the worse brand xfx or whatever. The rest are sold out. Wow, the mad dash has come and gone already. Figures the only 7950's are not worth the hassles. And here they almost double their prices. Wow! Just two months ago they were only $260 or so, plus $20 mail rebates or so. Even the Asus in summer dropped from $330 to $260 or so after rebate. Now they want over $400 for a Sapphire. OMG! figures. S&D laws.

And the Asus 9290 is the dreaded reference model (single fan). Don't do those. You were warned! AT least I had sense enough not to grab those dogs! lol...

Read buyer reviews. Those will be your best guide. Note how many failures there are per model and brand! % wise.

Might try amazon and e-bay, new and used, but beware of used ones that have been mined with AND ran too hot for long periods, most went to miners so don't believe any tall tales, but hey, many gamers too out there so maybe?

Don't pay a premium for any unless maybe Asus twin fan 7950's, or MSI's Twin Fan Model, or Gigabytes 3 fan model.

Asus 7950 2 Fan Model - built to last, overbuilt, rugged, heavy. Even the Gigabytes 3 fan models don't compare since it's just another flimsy fan apt to break and well the more cheap fans = more likely failures, maybe? But maybe not. Every report I read says the miners all love them, but some reviews I read were not good. Plus those Gigabytes are very long cards and wont resell easy to fit in mid tower cases all too often. So anyway there ya go.

Do your research. That's all I know. A lot has changed though in only 8 months time. Wow...surprising too.

The RUN on cards has merely just begun too. But hopefully the factories are wise enough to ramp up production fast...

And I was thinking of building another rig, maybe. But...not at $420 x 3 + the PC hardware/software. Then again if I was just getting into this then yea, 1 three card rig sounds bout right, better than being left in the dust, just in case this is the real deal... Heck all those doubters saying it's not worth it ended up being wrong by way over $10,000.00 or more, maybe a LOT more, in just 8 months time. Lot's of bad advice around these parts. Be wary of whom you believe or trust.

Go for it!

This is the new Monetary Revolution and the trains are now leaving their terminals.
So is the rocket ride to the Cryto-Stars if I have even the slightest clue, lol.

So far I am up an obscene amount cause my little rig wasn't enough for my tastes,
I backed up the truck a few times and outright bought again and again more flavors
of coins. Yippee! So far. I would say Yahoo but their slimy now too just like googlebutt.
Time for more than just a Monetary Revolution. Make it a Privacy Revolution TOO.

For a newbe try out GUIMiner-scrypt ,and toss that man a few coin if you like it.
He is absolutely a good guy. And don't fret over the virus warnings. It's just because
the hackers use the same cgminer and others to mine with their botnets. And well...
But be careful to only download from the github sources, or their real source download
pages if at all possible. Find them! Be wary, real wary of other download pages.

And secure another pc for your Qt wallets, just for wallets, no surfing, no nothing.

Caveat emptor - let the buyer beware!

Thanks for the tip
Just to confirm, are you saying there is no difference then between the Vapor x, dual x, and toxic X?
Yes there is a difference, look at the specification and features.
But for mining the difference is minimal I believe, so go for the cheapest of those three.

best hash rate is on Radeon R9 280X ,

Keep in your mind that HD 7970 GHz = Radeon R9 280X (they is only a small difference in frequencies )

I'm looking to get a gaming rig, and figured I might mine litecoins when Im not gaming.

Which of the following cards do you think would give the best hash rate

SAPPHIRE VAPOR-X HD 7970 GHz EDITION 3GB 384bit

SAPPHIRE TOXIC Radeon R9 280X 3GB 384bit Graphics

SAPPHIRE VAPOR X Radeon R9 280X 3GB 384bit Graphics

SAPPHIRE DUAL X Radeon R9 280X 3GB 384bit Graphics
