I found that I was getting an error:

ADL found more devices than opencl!
[2013-12-31 09:35:24] There is possibly at least one GPU that doesn't support OpenCL
[2013-12-31 09:35:24] Use the gpu map feature to reliably map OpenCL to ADL
[2013-12-31 09:35:24] WARNING: Number of OpenCL and ADL devices did not match!
[2013-12-31 09:35:24] Hardware monitoring may NOT match up with devices!

To resolve this I did the following:

# init 3
# rm -rf /etc/X11/xorg.conf
# aticonfig -f --initial --adapter=all
Uninitialised file found, configuring.
Using /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Saving back-up to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.original-1
#init 5
#exit
~>./cgminer.sh

Now both cards are recognized and initialized and mining to their little GPU's content.

Well that worked somewhat, but for some reason it stops at runlevel 3 and I have to manually enter runlevel 5.  It would previously autologon to runlevel 5.  While it's not a big deal if I need to remotely shutdown and reboot it may be an issue if it needs both cards connected to a monitor to complete boot up into runlevel 5.  I will need to do some testing.

Many thanks.

I tried the --initial but not the --adapter=all switch.  I will try that tomorrow.

I am running OpenSuSe and have several different desktop options including XFCE.  I am currently using KDE, but now that you mention it XFCE or something more light wieght makes more sense to use since all you need it to do is load the drivers.  You want the rest of the graphics power used to mine.

Helperizer
sudo aticonfig --initial --adapter=all

But you also have to have a desktop that can handle it - I know I had a devil of a time using Cinnamon under Mint 14.  Eventually, I switched to LXDE and no worries.  Probably would have been fine with XFCE too.

Some more ideas here, too:

I am trying to setup 2 6970s together using Linux.  I have one card running fine, but when I install the second card it doesn't boot into the graphical user mode.  Do I need to reinstall the drivers to support both cards?  or run a aticonfig to get it to recognize the second card?  It boots to run level 3 just fine.

1 card is a MSI Twin Frozr 6970 and the other is a Sapphire 6970.
