If you are using Windows 8 or above (as it looks like you are in the pictures) then do the following. Otherwise, please let me know.

Open the file explorer and click the View tab. Check the box for "File name extensions". Then go to the folder that contains your wallet.dat.txt file, it should show the whole file name, including the extension. Right click it and select Rename and rename the file to just wallet.dat without the .txt file extension. It should give you a warning, and just click OK. Then that should work now in the Bitcoin data directory.
Thanks a bunch for the reply. I finally got this much done thanks to a guy (Named FUBAR) in a BTC chat helping me out. It was a minor pain  Cry getting the extension to show, because I'm unfamiliar with windows 8. Thankfully, I was able to change the .txt file back into a .dat file. I just hope it wasn't somehow corrupted by the conversions to .txt and back.

Currently working on importing the .dat into a digital wallet. Was unable to import via blockchain.info/wallet/import-wallet, so right now I'm waiting for bitcoin-qt to synch, which seems to require a long time.

Hopefully I will be able to finish solving this puzzle on my own. Either way, I'll return here to either report success or ask for more help. I joined a few other forums in my quest for the 1 BTC, so I plan to report back to all.

Thanks a bunch for the help.  Smiley

Thank you so much for replying swiftly!

Unfortunately I don't think this will be QUITE that simple. I may have misspoke before the file name is wallet.dat but it is saved a a .txt, so I'm unsure of how to remove the .txt here..

Here are some images to better show what I'm working with here:

First, make a backup, or two.

Then, just try renaming it without the .txt and see if that is the issue.   There is recovery software to try also IF it gets to that point.
Backups are on the original drive which is currently unplugged.
Recovery software?

Hi there, this will be my first time posting here so please forgive any newbyness.

A friend recently gave me an old thumbdrive with a wallet.dat.txt file on it. He had bought a full BTC but didn't know what he was doing or how to spend it so he said I can keep it if can figure it out.

I'm semi-familiar with BTC but know almost nothing about paper wallets/cold storage. After some research, I discovered I might could import it here: https://blockchain.info/wallet/import-wallet

However, I get the following error message: Unknown File Type wallet.dat.txt

I think perhaps he may have played with it trying to get the BTC, and opened the .dat with a word processor which converted the file to wallet.dat.txt

Is there any way to convert the wallet.dat.txt back into wallet.dat? Or is that even the problem here?

Just trying to get at that free 1 BTC. Please help! Any/all advice is welcome!

Rename file wallet.dat

Go to blockchain.info

Creat a new wallet, log in

Go to settings, import the wallet.dat file.

Enjoy btc.

When this works, feel free to send a tip with your new found riches
