Is there any way to salvage what I currently have ? Looks like the best option for me is to use the cable that comes with the Psu, 6-Pin to 4-pin molex (female).  Basically powering the riser directly from the psu, i read that 2 are ok per line.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated  Grin

From what I've read, the issue is with cables that aren't crimped, you don't want the wires to be glued.

I used the ones in your first link, they are very poorly made.

Almost guaranteed that you will get at least one that is a failure.

I got this one yesterday that didn't even have the pins soldered to the board:

You want the kind of powered risers it shows here in this kit. http://www.parallelminer.com/product/all-aluminium-6-1-gpu-open-air-mining-case-w-6-usb-risers-1-1200w-psu-kit-eth-zec/ --- They sell the parts separately too, but I linked that so that you could see everything together. I'd not use the molex powered risers at all if I were you.

Sorry for putting this in the wrong section, I was rushing when I wrote this.

My problem is that the PCIe risers are powered by a Sata-to-4Pin Molex cable. I keep reading that those tend to burn so I am looking for an alternative. I was thinking of putting the 6 pin from (this) and plugging in two of these (this).

I'm not quite sure how the splitter would help me. Can you please elaborate?












That PSU is great for handling without the slightest problem 6 x RX 470 GPU-s. That PSU is fully modular and it has 8 PCI express to use directly with the GPU-s and 12 sata cables to connect 5 risers without problems, I am having one lower than that the Corsair Rx1000i gold plus 80 efficiency and is holding up well 5 GPU-s of RX 480. Corsair is the brand to go in mining based on my personal experience. Coolermaster costs a lot more and the performance is not superior or better than Corsair at all.

i simply ue those normal risers, they do the job good for me with my nivida rig, i don't know with amd, but amd is more power hungry and also depend on the motherboard you use, if you use the asrock h81 it has two molex and you don't need additional power, otherwise better to go with powered risers

Thanks for the replies, unfortunately I don't know how to manufacture cables or how to modify them.

I keep coming across conflicting info which is making things very confusing. I have 20 Ver007 risers with SATA/Molex cable adapters.

I keep finding info that the SATA/Molex cables burn a lot and they're rated for ~50W and the GPUs pull ~130W. Based on the numbers this makes sense, I'm still trying to figure out how much wattage goes through the cable and how much goes through the power cables that come from the PSU directly to the GPU.

But I also see a lot of people buying these risers with SATA cable and use them in their 500 series rigs. I don't want to gamble with 20 GPUS and risk burning down my house.

What are my options as far as powering these risers? (Besides using the SATA cables that tend to burn a lot)

That's probably what you're thinking of for the difference in the riser, powered by a Sata cable.

It's a Sata-6pin on the riser, that's the go to now for risers. It's much safer to use than the Sata-molex adapters, and you can even skip that entirely and just buy a set of splitters that split the PCIE power into both the GPU and the riser, which is also much safer than molex.

Pretty much you never want to use molex unless absolutely necessary for mining.

Pretty sure those adapters are going the wrong way.

I'm not sure how Corsairs are pinned out at the PSU (I don't have one to reference), but I've made cables from the SATA/PERF ports on an EVGA to 4-pin Molex for risers. Not too difficult, and rated for the power you'd be drawing.

They will melt for sure. In my experience, using these cables results in eventual melting and destruction of the pcie port, resulting in a very expensive brick. Even if they do not warm up immediately you will have power issues and it's easier to just get a server psu or splitter. This is definitely something you do NOT want to go ghetto with. For reference, a splitter is a couple of bucks and a good server psu costs ~100 bucks with pcie cables included, some with ten.

First things first - this belongs in the alt coin section, this is not bitcoin mining hardware related at all.



You must be buying on archaic power supply if it is going to have 10 molex plugs, you do not want to use molex as they only have a single 12v wire. Any PSU capable of powering that many cards should have a fair number of PCI-E connectors already. You can then just buy splitters. Just remember to not daisy chain the splitters into each other.

I want to build three rigs with 6 RX 570s in each and I'm trying to figure out how to power them properly.

I bought a bunch of these guys (ver007): https://www.amazon.ca/6-Pack-Powered-Riser-Adapter-Extension/dp/B01N3UVJHM
and I was going to power the them with this: https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-2-Pack-Molex-Power/dp/B01DV1Z22K/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1494962381&sr=1-3&keywords=6+pin+to+molex from the PSU directly because I've been reading that Molex/Sata cables tend to burn because they're not designed to handle so much power draw.

However, a lot of people are saying that you have to do the finger-temp test after a few mins of mining to see if the sata/molex cable is hot, if it isn't then it's gonna work fine.
