I don't recommend using emulator for the purpose of authentication because it crashes often a lot or atleast that is what I am experienced. So its better to go with Google authenticator itself and if you have doubt in that then ise Authy which comes with desktop version as well as mentioned above.

I do not wish to use google authentication because it imposes extra steps to access my email address.
Google authenticator has nothing to do with your email address.
Anyways, as suggested by vv181 in the above post, you can use authy as an alternative to Google authenticator.

The other alternative is Aegis. But the problem is that it doesn't have a desktop version.
Aegis is open-source and it's the best choice, in my opinion.
I recommend you to use Aegis whenever the problem with your phone is solved.

Here is the issue I am encountering.  The instructions I am finding are not explicitly telling me where to enter codes and keys to gain permission to fund my account. The keys and codes sometimes don't seem to be unique. Each attempt is either declined or blocked because of too many attempts.
Which instruction did you refer to? their how to setup authentication article are good enough, see it here: How to Enable & Disable Authenticator.

Also, if you can't access the 2FA authenticator on mobile, you can use Authy. The app is available in a desktop application. Even Gate.io said it only supports Google Authenticator, Authy would do the same job.

In an attempt to diversify my crypto holdings, I have created an account in gate.io. After many hours of research and attempted use, I find myself unable to complete authentication to use gate.io.  I need to use a desktop authenticator because touch screens are nearly impossible for me to use. (making it necessary to have a dumb phone.)

Information found at the gate.io website reveals that only two forms of authentication are accepted: google authentication and gate authentication. I do not wish to use google authentication because it imposes extra steps to access my email address. The other form is available through bluestacks (using an android emulator) to employ the gate authenticator.

Here is the issue I am encountering.  The instructions I am finding are not explicitly telling me where to enter codes and keys to gain permission to fund my account. The keys and codes sometimes don't seem to be unique. Each attempt is either declined or blocked because of too many attempts.

I am equipped with dual monitors, allowing me to have multiple tabs/windows visible at the same time. What I need is step wise instruction, hopefully including screenshots, to guide me through the process.

Thanks in advance for helpful replies.
