I bought two, and one of them only hashed at full speed for a week or two, then dropped a board and ran at half speed. You can see it in my sig, and it's back to be swapped for an S9 which will not be at home but hosted at the Hoth ice planet mines.
My other one, R4B2, is great! Quiet, efficient, and just runs even though I tend to reboot it every day or two to move it among a few pools I like.

i did some looking around on it; this is definitely something i would definitely consider buying in a month or two. really appreciate the input. i gotta ask though, what do you mean when you say they're 'flaky?' I'm assuming you mean they break / burn out easily, but just want to make sure.
too bad theyre all sold out and second hand prices are about ~2500 usd, if anyone knows where i can actually get one of these at a reasonable price, please do tell, and also if you own one of these and can tell me more about how its operation / heat output / reliability.

Not true, R4's were specifically designed to be used in residential living spaces, quiet and pull less than 1kW each. If you can find/get one that doesn't go on the fritz after a time you'll love it! Too bad they're so flaky...

Miners are industrial equipment and are not designed to be run in a living space. If you have concerns with heat and noise you should not bother buying anything as any miner that can make you any money will be loud and hot.

The numbers are distance in feet from the unit. I didn't have time to change the frequency and test readings with each frequency. I think that the post you reference is the side hack mod, but I don't know much more about it as it was already done when I received the unit last week. I believe it is a way to increase the efficiency of the unit but someone can correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks a bunch for following up; im a tad confused on what those numbers you put before the decibel readings mean; im assuming its how much you downclocked it, please correct me if im wrong.
looking around, I found thsi thread: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/hacking-the-s7-improving-efficiency-through-minor-hardware-manipulation-1504228
which i assume is the sidehack mod you're talking about; however I couldnt really understand / find how the mod is actually done. is it something that I could do fairly easily?
with the numbers you've given me, this might be something i pick up (if i can actually find one at a reasonable price), unless theres a comparable miner that's more efficient in terms of price / hashing power within my price range.

I'm not currently running them here at the house but will connect them up later today and take some readings for you. I'm taking them up to the cabin Monday morning so they are still here. I have a real sound level meter for my audiophile system so I will take readings with that while they are running.

I was looking at the s7's but it seems with stock settings, they produce around ~60 decibels of noise during operation, which is far more than what I would like. given that you've clocked yours down quite a bit, how much noise is / was your setup producing at that speed? theres a bunch of smartphone apps available that give you a pretty good reading on decibel noise levels. id you're still running that same setup, id much appreciate it if you could get a reading from that.

I'm only familiar with Bitmain products and mostly S9s, but I just bought some S7s as a space heater for my cabin and I turned their frequency down to 475M which still lets their hash rate stay above 3 tH/s and keeps their power down to under 1,000 watts. The S7-LN has only 2 hash blades, comes with a PSU, and is very quiet and doesn't produce much heat. You can also change the frequency on the S7-LN to further reduce power consumption and therefore reduce heat and noise.

Im familiar with the basics of mining, but not familiar enough to know what miners would fit my needs.
Im looking specifically for a miner that is fairly quiet, doesnt require a lot of other hardware to set up, and won't produce too much heat. This being said, im fully willing to set up a miner with a lower hash rate than the powerhouses that are available today. Also, electricity is not a concern in the miner i buy, the main concerns are the price of the miner, noise, and heat.
If you have suggestions and personal experience with a miner that fits the criteria im looking for, id much appreciate what you've got to say. I'll probably be buying the miner itself in the next month or two.
