I guess the main sensor won't be able to tell if it is on the ground or not as I need it to work in structures off the ground.
Do proximity sensors exist that can tell the distance between themselves and the main sensor with 5cm degree of accuracy?

Accelerometer alone cannot tell the altitude of itself. Consider ultrasonic distance meters, but there must be nothing between the sensor and ground for correct detection.
I want to build a master sensor with an accelerometer maybe than can tell the difference between being on the floor and one foot off the ground. I also need 4 other sensors that can communicate with each other and relay information to the main sensor. It needs to have a lithium ion battery supply as well as a speaker with a few recorded phrases and noises that will be triggered based on the position of the sensors.
The sensors need accuracy from 5cm to 25cm at the most. The sensors need to be able to tell the distance from each sensor.
Is something like this possible?
