Congress arguably made jailbreaking iPhones a felony several months back. Not only jailbreaking iPhones, but also rooting Androids, and any number of other not-uncommon operations to numerous types of devices. I forget the specific verbiage, but it was something along the lines of 'countermand any intentionally manufacturer-imposed restriction to enable otherwise disabled functionality'.

It was one small clause in a rather large bill to get those evil terrrists.

A felony.

Rasberry-Pi here we come...

...those government fools will never learn they can't stop the geniuses.

3D printing will improve. Decentralization of manufacture will increase.

Fuck Obama and every other lame (as in worse than useless) government bureaucrat.

Paternity leave for men anyone? (Obamacare requirement)

I thought about buying a couple of those. One as a personal email server and one for bitcoin

It's revolves around implicit legal agreements that you make with the network carrier who sold the phone to you, and that's because they sold the phone below retail cost, knowing they can make the money back on profits from calls and data.

Unlocked phones won't be illegal, but you'll have to buy them unlocked, which you can already do anyway. I agree it's a pain, but you are kind of abusing that subsidised handset price, especially if you were to buy the cheapest package of the phone you're looking for, and then unlock it the minute you got it home, then switching straight to the cheapest carrier for your typical usage.

can't you just stop buying that apple crap?

This.

Apples policy of handholding its customers and deciding for its customers what they can and can't do with their device is entirely incompatible with the philosophy of Bitcoin.

Google isn't the nicest company either, but at least Android lets you install whatever you want right out of the box.

New challenges for Bitcoin and Namecoin

Jailbreaking and unlocking phones or tablets may become illegal in some cases:
http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2013/11/jailbreaking-and-unlocking-might-be-restricted-in-treaty-pushed-by-obama/
http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2012/10/jailbreaking-now-legal-under-dmca-for-smartphones-but-not-tablets/
Probably new laws will come out then Namecoin and Bitcoin may have new difficulties and challenges running applications on some devices.
On iPhone and iPad you may not run legally any more only applications from App Store, which is not very Bitcoin friendly.
May be only chosen Bitcoin Wallets will be in the App Store which will have a built in coin-tracker.
Further a new era of content controlling may began and people will need more then ever a decentralized naming system with distributed content.
