Think some of my brain cells committed suicide after watching this.  Common modern Typical american cartoon.

They weren't ever supposed to be this "big"....

"At first, they envisioned Gru’s inept henchmen as hulking monsters. “Initially the Minions were supposed to be this army of Orc-like brutes, but they just kept becoming smaller and smaller,” said Coffin. Eventually, they became the cute, funny little things we know and love today."

Trivia: ‘Despicable Me’ Minions Originally Meant to Be Big, Orcish Monsters

"The Good & Plenty-shaped sidekicks work as mischievous foils to Steve Carrell's villainous Gru, but they were never meant to take center stage. Never, that is, until "Despicable Me 3" got pushed to 2017, and Universal had a hole to fill in its summer slate."

" And therein lies the biggest problem of “Minions” – they don’t do anything with the characters. Part of this is that they were never meant to be the singular focus of a feature-length movie. They were designed as marginalia; little characters who could generate sight gags or other jokes while the rest of the action unfolded around them. They speak a bizarre hodgepodge of French, Italian, Spanish, Yiddish and god knows what else so even their intention and emotions are hard to read on their blank faces. Focusing the movie on them makes sense on a marketing level but on a narrative level it’s a disaster. And they should have known this by now. Large swaths of “Despicable Me 2” were devoted to them and that movie barely hung together (that film had the good sense to change them, at least, into evil purple gremlins). (link)

It’s a shame, too. The “Despicable Me” movies were never mistaken for great entertainment or artistic triumphs; they were low-budget confections that appealed to the masses. " (link)

But because audiences loved this crap, they became huge.... seeping into memes online. I had no idea until I found the site http://fuckminions.tumblr.com/ while looking for the news story that McDonalds minion toys are apparently swearing even though they're supposed to speak gibberish:
