"Most of the troops brought in by the government didn’t know the city of Moscow.
This was just another building, and they saw a guy in a helmet and uniform on top of a
building and somebody shot at him. He was nearly killed. Our embassy doctor took care
of him, and we received, I’m happy to say, good cooperation from the Russian authorities
in evacuating him to a Russian hospital and saving his life. Despite the hugely important
political events taking place around us, I suspect that for many of the Americans
involved, the shooting of Corporal Bell is the most painful memory of those days. "
