That's what I told to my friend, who wanted to buy that wallet. But greedy idiots, who thought that they got the password, bought 2 copies of that junk. That scam was all about the greediness and stupidity of the people, and as you can see it worked.

They should be called greediots... that is one level higher than regular idiots.
And now they will probable blame someone else.

Why don't they post scammers BTC address in public?

Not saying that these users deserved to be scammed (no one deserves), but they cracked the password and instead of trying to help OP by giving him the password and maybe asking for a reward (if it was all real), they just bought the wallet file to try take all the 850 BTC for themselves. Karma is a bitch.

It's not exactly new - I've heard about a few attemps like that before. This seems like an elaborate one. But still, too good to be true is likely not true. Why would someone sell a wallet for a tiny fraction of its balance if they can just brute force the 5 missing characters or ask someone to do it?

What happened

Fake BTC wallet with lost password.

Scammers thread https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/a-eayao-5181931

Description.

One of my Russian friends contacted me regarding this. He was about to buy that wallet, but I recommended him to avoid doing so.

What happened

One Russian dude announced that he was selling a 850 BTC Wallet.dat with lost password. He was claiming that it was a 12 digit password and he knew first 7 digits and another 5 were lost.  First 7 digits = Skipper and another 5 was a combination of marks @%&*(_+)!$^  Then he said that there were 7 addresses imported to one wallet and published the addresses. Of course someone asked him to publish the hash of the wallet (Available via https://github.com/magnumripper/JohnTheRipper/blob/bleeding-jumbo/run/bitcoin2john.py) so anyone could try to recover the password, without having a Wallet.dat file.  After he published that hash, couple of users cracked the password easily. So they immediately bought that wallet (It was listed on satoshidisc) Of course the wallet was fake with spend only addresses imported and without keys.

Final Result = Scammer sold two copies of the wallet.dat file for 0.2 BTC each and despaired.

Use google translator for reading the thread, if you don't understand Russian

BE WARY CAREFUL AND DO NOT BUY ANY WALLET WITH LOST PASSWORD, EVEN IF YOU CRACKED THAT PASSWORD VIA HASH OF THE WALLET !!!
