You would be much better off running "A pool of One" if you want the Army metaphor.  That way you can use your graphics card.  That way you really can help to stop an attack.  (and save on your electricity bill)

Also, turn off your current block mining.  That is a total waste.  I don't even know why that is still in there.

It's still in there as a form of hashing reserve.  If some attacker with huge hashing resources were to start trying to rewrite the recent blocks, there is still a greater pool of hashing power that can be called upon; even if it's relatively inefficient.

Basicly the cpu mining option exists in the standard client as the "ready reserve" to the gpu mining pools' "front line shock troops".

Download guiminer.  http://forum.bitcoin.org/?topic=3878.0  Join a Pool.  Deepbit is easy to use. I use BTCMine.  Make sure Guiminer is set to use your graphics card instead of your cpu.  There is a dropdown box.  Set Guiminer to connect to your pool.  Your 5770 should get 160Mh/s or so.

Also, turn off your current block mining.  That is a total waste.  I don't even know why that is still in there.

I have a decent computer that i use for gaming and want to try some mining. I have a amd 6 core proccessor and a 5770 amd graphics card. I went to bitcoin.org and downloaded the thing for windows and started doing blocks but my computer is sitting at 1% gpu usage. I know this a noob question but i just trying to figure out how to get my computer to mine faster is there a program i need to download?
