it's usually in exchange for your time.
Everyone is free to determine the value of their own time, I usually value mine high enough not to be bothered with faucets.
Nevertheless I can imagine some people have more free time than me on their hands and will grasp the opportunity, for them it can be a great way of making some easy money.

faucets were my first intro, because it's easy and risk free - but after i realised that i was getting like one 10,000th of a cent at each site, and that my hourly "earnings" were like $0.02/hr, i just bought some coins. not worth being late to work to do it.

Faucets are never legit, some might pay due to a certain time or at start just to win over the trust of people to ensure that more and more people start investing in them and once they get enough coins for their Christmas then they will just get lost in the winds !!!
