Speaking of "newbie" i refer to design flawn in this particular status: I may have not been posting much, yet not new either. (Other status may be less flawned, yet crypto currencies live on egalitarian ideals) Feedback/trust is already implemented.
Similarity in names(, if that's all,) can be done through "string similarity algorithms" (i'd be up to help). Fraud prevention by message style similarity (short quotes) wont be too hard either. Labeling users by IP networks may already be in place too
On similar names I'm guessing you mean when someone tries to look like another user. The newbie warning helped stop scams, and people really do throw negative trust quick so they are not going to scam people.
As far as IP admins check on it. We don't know all of what they do as it should be. If we had a list of how all they use it people could try to avoid all the way's they use it.

I'd rather have it than not and thinks its a good addition to the forum but I'm like Somekindabitcoin and always double check when trading to make sure the person is who they say they are. Any change to the forum to reduce possible scams is good in my book

personally I don't mind the warnings but if some people don't like it then I think it'll be far easier for all sides if there's an option for it, like how we can disable signature. of course it should be enabled by default.

Fair play to theymos for taking steps to stop people getting scammed by newbie accounts.
People shouldn't really shouldn't be getting scammed in that way though.

But that do not work now, instead they have to launch their phishing attempts in the thread,

This seems to be a good feature, just now i saw a PM i received and i was utterly Confused about why has that guy wrote those words to me and i PM'e him back , asking about it , on which he said he didn't do anything. Now i see it has been added as a new feature to the Forum.
That is good but when i reply im back , it get's added to my message and i had to manually remove it ! Can something be done about that?

I just got here from seeing this message, It somewhat startled me, But I nearly responded with it, It could put new users in turmoil seeing this from a hero+ member.

I got a PM from a newbie the other day (without knowing about this improvement) I noticed the warning right away.
For the record the PM from the newbie was legit, it is a user with a 1 year old account which is just not very active, I have done a number of trades with this person.
Nevertheless the warning made me check an extra time that in fact it was the right person I communicated with.

There are scammers that will create a userID that looks VERY similar to a trusted bitcointalk user (or that will purchase an old account that already has some trust feedback). They will then contact you pretending to be the trusted user. Make sure that you are talking to the person you think you are.

Although I understand why it was added, I never understood how some people could be so unaware of the username when talking to another user. At ths rate in few years time we'll have to spoon feed people.
I love this new feature hopefully it'll help stop people being scammed and put off scammers from trying.

There is an issue with this warning as it gets quoted in the message text. Two newbies sent me PMs and by mistake I quoted the complete message and they also got to see the warning "!!! WARNING: This user is a newbie. If you are expecting a message from a more veteran member, then this is an imposter !!!" I am now editing the quotes in the message text but it's quite time consuming to do it all the time.

Yes , am facing the same problem . I replied them without removing Quote and they were asking me , why is it for .

Now I really want to bet , do you think that some newbie imposter will be able to scam another user? I think that there will be someone who will be scammed (and I am not kidding).
I remember seeing many people mostly newbies saying that they sent money to Escrow and it turned out the Escrow was just a imposter and had a slight difference in the username . I also remember seeing someone sent BTC to wrong person(imposter) for the Advertising auction of forum by Theymos. So as i think , it'll avoid newbie members to be scammed by imposters and scammers .
How difficult would it be to add a PM warning for accounts that have changed passwords recently (or ever)?
Changing passwords is a good security measure. I don't thing punishing that with a measure like this is a good idea. At most a something saying "This user has recently change their password" but without red alerts or sirens.
I have asked this improvement to theymos in that thread, but he never changed the color of the 'write' (or also the size).

I like this idea, although I do see one flaw that may actually make it more difficult to find/out scammers (that I sent a PM amount).
I have gotten a pretty good number of these newbie imposter scammers, and they have pretty much all been blatantly obvious, at least to me.

Its not that farfetched when you're expecting a PM from someone without an Avatar. Traders of advertisers especially get a lot of PMs and so might just skim for the content of a PM they were expecting.

Would be nice to see something about password changes like TheButterZone suggested. Can usually be found on the trust page but would be so much easier if the warning was made clear on the private message. People around here seem to be lazy sometimes or just don't make it to the trust page before completing a deal :\

Hmm.. Good idea. If you could, why not have it on old message too? Just check if the message at the time of sending is Newbie or not. After that, we could have a personal setting that let us set a minimum rank to show warning for message.
This is an awesome idea. Will hopefully prevent the situations where scammers imitate the names of reputable members.

PMs from newbies now have a warning added to the beginning of the PM. The warning is actually added to the PM's text, so it won't be added to old PMs or removed when the sender leaves newbie status.
The warning is:
!!! WARNING: This user is a newbie. If you are expecting a message from a more veteran member, then this is an imposter !!!
