Hmm, alright, I'll try that out and see how it goes.  Thanks for the help!

According to https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison, you should be getting around 190 MH/s with that card. I have never used Nvidia so I don't know if it will work with Guiminer or not. Check out that link and try the recommended settings. If that still doesn't work you could try cgminer.

As for cloud mining, most posts still indicate that it's not worth it, and/or that the cloud provider will turn off your service due to the way-above-normal use of resources.

Okay, so, I'm trying to get started mining bitcoins on my PC using GUIminer, and set it up according to the how-to article on NewsLobster, that was linked to through SchizophrenicX's Beginner's Guide.

I'm well aware that mining with a single PC card is tantamount to playing the lottery, with the difficulty being what it is, I'm just trying to do it for the know-how, not to make money.

So, I have a few questions, hopefully someone who's technically inclined and familiar with this can answer:

1.So I'm trying to do the solo miner setup though GUIminer.  Now, my card is an NVIDIA (yes I know they suck for mining) GTX 590, a dual-gpu card. So, under GUIminer's default settings, I can get things started, but my hashrate is abysmal, like 1.4 MHash/s....shouldn't my card be getting more than that...more like 300 or so?

2. I didn't have any problems setting up a new OpenCL miner through the program, but when I tried to start a new CUDA miner, since my card supports CUDA, it wouldn't even show my GPUs on the menu.  On the default and OpenCL menus, it shows my GPUs as '[0-0] GeForce GTX 590' and '[0-1] GeForce GTX 590'.  Hell, they even show up when I start a CG miner.  But the CUDA miner doesn't even show the Device drop-down menu, and hitting the "start mining" button simply does nothing.  So what's causing this?

Bonus question, if anyone still has any patience left. :p

I saw this thread here in which they were discussing bitcoin mining through the cloud.  Now, there's a link in that thread to an article where someone actually tried this, and their conclusion was that, at the time, bitcoins were worth so little it wasn't worth the time to rent the cloud power. I believe the person testing it was using time on one of Amazon's CPU clusters.

However, as you could probably see, that was back from 2011.  With bitcoins being worth what they are now, and Amazon now offering GPU clusters on their cloud, is there any reason to think that this would be viable?  Would you even get a decent hashrate if you rented a large GPU cluster?  Or would your connection bottleneck any potential benefits?

Many thanks to anyone who can help me out!!
