Local governments autonomy can be regarded as the extent which which LGA's are allowed to carry out their appropriate division of responsibility according to the constitution.

There are three tiers of government in Nigeria; federal government, state government and the  local government. The third tier of government beig the local government as recognised by by the Nigerian constitution,  supposed to be democratically electing LGAs Council chairmen and receive allocation direct from the federation account to carry out their constitutional obligations. But the reverse is the case. The state government to suit their political agenda and interests the  State have maintained control and domination over local governments allocation through state joint local government accounts and appointing caretakers over the affairs of the third tier Which is unconstitutional.

The local government is the closest tier of government to the grassroot both in rural and urban areas and their are obligations and grassroot project ought to be carried out by the but state governments keep absorbing the division of responsibility of LGAs for selfish reasons and states want it to remain so. The federal government led by the attorney General of the federation is suing for autonomy of LGA's

The 1975 Local government reform gave to local government administration in Nigeria, LGA autonomy is  the best for any responsible government, but like we always say the 1999 constitution was written by few individuals and gave it to us. The constitution made a rigorous for LGA autonomy,  in the constitution for establishment of LGA autonomy the state assembly of the 36 state has to vote 2/3. Which is very difficult to have. Because even FG wants the LGA to be free form the state,  the state won't let it, they will use their various state assembly to vote against it.

The Buhari led administration was determined to established the LGA autonomy but the Governors kicked against it. This is to probe that the constitution is faulty.
